General Description

Monona Terrace is looking for an experienced Director of Sales who will represent and promote Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center to prospective and existing clients.This is responsible sales, supervisory, and program administration work associated with the sales and marketing activities of the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. The work involves performing and supervising the daily work of staff relative to securing and booking facility usage for such events as meetings, conferences, consumer shows, banquets, and related activities. The work involves extensive public contact and sales activities and is performed under the general supervision of the Monona Terrace Associate Director.

The Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center is a place where nearly a half a million people gather each year to share, learn, grow, plan, design, and connect with one another. From formal events like conventions and conferences to public events like Dane Dances, Monona Terrace has wide geographical draw attracting local, regional, state, and international events each year. This Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building is a treasured community asset that has far reaching economic, business and quality of life impacts. This facility is located in the heart of Madison's vibrant downtown on the shore of Lake Monona, two blocks from the State Capitol. Its spectacular multi-level structure features public promenades, meeting rooms with striking lake views, and the attached Hilton Madison Monona Terrace. In addition to 85,000 square feet of interior function space, gracing the rooftop are 68,000 square feet of gardens. Meeting/exhibition space includes a 40,000 square foot exhibit hall, a 14,000 square foot ballroom, 315 seat lecture hall and 20 additional meeting rooms totaling 28,000 square feet.

THIS POSITION IS EMPLOYED UNDER AN INDIVIDUAL EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT AND IS ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE AN INCENTIVE PAY COMPONENT OF UP TO 15% OF THE BASE SALARY. THE INCENTIVE IS IN ADDITION TO THE BASE SALARY SHOWN ABOVE.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a network of client contacts.

  • Prepare materials and reports on events and usage to be used to evaluate the achievement of marketing and facility usage goals.

  • Work in cooperation with Monona Terrace Event Management staff to prepare cost estimates and negotiate rental agreements, and to ensure overall client satisfaction.

Plan, direct and supervise the daily activities of staff including Sales Associates, Booking Coordinators, and Booking Assistants.

  • Hire, train, evaluate and discipline lower level staff and handle employee grievances.

  • Perform and/or facilitate problem-solving relative to client and operational issues.

Oversee and perform activities relating to securing and booking facility usage for such purposes as meetings, seminars, conferences, retail and trade shows, exhibits, social events and entertainment events.

  • Attend sales conferences, trade shows, and other related events to promote Monona Terrace usage and develop clientele.

Make sales and educational presentations and outside sales calls to generate potential Center users.

  • Meet with client representatives to finalize agreements.

  • Conduct facility tours to point out features and facility capabilities.

  • Explain policies, services and fees and answers questions relative to facility usage and booking.

  • Send materials and bid proposals to requesting businesses and organizations.

Coordinate cooperative sales campaigns and materials in association with the food service vendor, Destination Madison and other business and community partners.

  • Work cooperatively with Destination Madison to optimize usage of the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center.

Assist the Monona Terrace Associate Director: Marketing and Events with the development, implementation, and administration of the sales and marketing plans for the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center.Perform related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of professional sales and marketing experience in the convention, hotel, and/or hospitality industry, including at least one (1) year of responsibility for managing a sales and marketing staff and/or program.

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, marketing, hotel and restaurant management, public administration, or other closely related fields (related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis).

If an applicant does not possess the specific requirements outlined above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience:

Four (4) years of experience in applying the following:

  • Marketing, sales, and promotional theories, techniques, and practices.

Two (2) years of experience in applying the following:

  • Market plan and budget development and administration techniques.

  • Supervisory principles, regulations, and practices.

  • Computer applications as they relate to marketing, contact management, sales and contract management and tracking, and related recordkeeping and reporting activities.
