The Unit Secretary/Monitor Tech acts as the primary clerical resource for the unit as well as monitors patients' EKG wave forms in a centralized monitoring station.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Performs a range of clerical duties that support the operations of the unit.

  • Acts as unit receptionist greeting and directing visitors.

  • Assists in the ordering, receipt and storage of supplies.

  • Assembles patient charts.

  • Answers unit telephone, transferring calls, determining when staff members should be paged and taking and forwarding messages.

  • Serves as an important link in the communication chain ensuring information is transmitted between nursing personnel, other hospital personnel, physicians, patients, family members and other guests.

  • Assists in entering patient information in Meditech computer system.

  • Maintains nursing station in neat and orderly manner.

  • Completes special projects for unit director, supervisors and charge nurses.

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

  • Orients and mentors new staff members.

Qualifications include:

  • Minimum of a high school degree or equivalent required.

  • BLS through the American Heart Association required upon hire.

  • Previous clerical experience and CMT/cardiac experienced preferred.

  • Previous experience as a unit secretary and monitor tech in a hospital setting

preferred

  • Strong customer service skills required.

  • Familiarity with medical terminology is desired.

  • Computer literacy is required.

  • Completion of basic EKG/Arrhythmia course.

CNA experience preferred

  • Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching,

squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting patients and/or equipment up to 50 pounds.

Participate in the unit based Quality Improvement process. Demonstrates knowledge and application of basic patient care, to include activities of daily living, vital signs, and intake and output. Demonstrates knowledge and respect of patient rights to privacy & protection of patient confidentiality. Organizes and communicates patient care activities to the patient and to the Registered Nurse. Monitors and documents information regarding patient care activities to the patient activities, as directed by the Registered Nurse. Completes, executes, and performs secretarial tasks such as order entry, filing, and organizing patient charts and medication orders. Communicates, interacts, and participates in team work on the unit. Demonstrates an understanding of patients' charts, physician orders, and nursing orders. Promotes and displays a positive customer oriented demeanor to patients, visitors, staff, and physicians. Demonstrates an understanding and is proficient in the use of computer and office equipment. Actively seeks ways to control costs without compromising patient safety, quality of care, or the services delivered. Demonstrates knowledge of the notification reporting system. Uses system to report potential patient safety issues. Follows established guidelines for reporting a significant medial error or unanticipated outcome in the patient's care which results in patient harm. Attends in-service presentations and completes all mandatory education requirements. Regular, punctual, and dependable attendance. May have access to the medication room or designated area(s) to transport, assemble, and stock (inventory) of non-scheduled drugs and biologicals to include but not limited to fluids, sterile water, normal saline, and irrigations. Other duties as assigned.
