Job Summary:

A Mohs Technician prepares human body tissue for examination by other laboratory/medical professionals.

The person in this position performs tissue embedding, cryotomy, and all related histology tasks. The technician with also perform special stains and immunohistochemical staining as directed. This position is involved in a team-based approach to care.

Team members are trained to meet the highest level of function for their role as per the State of Tennessee/Georgia guidelines. Is trained and assigned (as per their role and responsibilities) to coordinate care for patients and is trained and assigned to support patients/families/caregivers in self-management, self-efficacy and behavior change. Is trained and assigned (as per their role and responsibilities) to manage the practices patient population.

Participates in the practice's quality improvement process and performance evaluation. Education: Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Certification as HTL (ASCP) or two (2) years prior experience.

Preferred: BS/BA in medical technology or related. Certification as HTL (ASCP) or two (2) years prior experience. Experience: Required: Minimum of one-year experience working in a histology lab, performing microtome and/or embedding is required.

A mohs technician in Dermatology prepares tissue samples from patients in preparation for histologic analysis. Tissue preparation consists of embedding tissue, performing cryotomy, slide preparation, mixing chemicals, observing results, and storing the tissue for later processing, if necessary. Performs accessioning of specimens and related paperwork associated with specimen preparation for processing.

Mohs technician may also need to pre-screen samples and will maintain specimens in orderly and organized fashion. The technician will maintain instrumentation, including calibration and maintenance. Technician will identify and document technical issues, maintain quality assurance logs per CLIA specifications, and work with physicians to optimize team performance.

Performs additional tasks as assigned. Assists in instrumentation selection, scheduling, and CQI activities. There will be additional clinical responsibilities in this role.

Ideally the candidate will have medical assistant or nurse designation and certification and can assist with non-surgical clinical patient care including rooming patients, assisting with patient encounters including scribing, and assisting with procedures when we are not performing Mohs. If the candidate is strictly a Mohs histotechnician there will be some clinical administrative responsibilities including management of biopsy and melanoma logs and making biopsy result patient calls.

  • Prepare tissue samples by fixing, staining, dying, trimming, and other methods.

  • Identify and document technical issues, quality assurance, and procedural improvements.

  • Use, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment, and keep a clean, disinfected workspace.

  • Receive, log, and document patient specimens and accompanying forms.
