You could be the Moderate Hazard Facility Operations Technologist we are seeking to provide guidance on test setup and ensure facility readiness through planning and executing maintenance of the test facilities. This role requires extensive outdoor work in potentially extreme conditions, including high temperatures, inclement weather, and working on the ground with a commitment to operational safety, security and quality.
On any given day, you may participate in:
Guide or collaborate with a team of Technologists to execute tasks
Plan activities to meet customer and facility requirements
Promote constant process and facility improvement by identifying opportunities, proposing solutions and then executing
Maintaining outdoor test facilities including welding, fabricating, general labor, dirt work, infrastructure wiring, fiber optics, and temperature conditioning equipment
Completing test specific builds with printed or general instruction
Helping diagnose problems, repair electrical/mechanical equipment, and provide technical support for research and development activities
Coordinating with engineers, technologists and contractors on facility and equipment repairs, installation, troubleshooting, logistics, and documentation
Independently pursuing solutions to technical problems with general oversight
Supporting temperature conditioning equipment including test planning, design, field operation and troubleshooting
You may need to travel quarterly, including weekends, to support program needs
Qualifications We Require
You have a high school diploma
Your background includes three or more years' experience in general technical roles
You bring experience with schematics, drawings, layouts, and/or similar specifications
You have experience operating heavy equipment (i.e. Loader, Skid Steer, Excavator, Forklift, Telehandler, etc .)
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance
Qualifications We Desire
Ideally, we would like to see your background include some of the following:
Associate degree in relevant Mechanical concentration areas
Demonstrated ability to deliver results and guide multidisciplinary teams
Experience producing technical manuals and guides
Experience with design, installation, testing, repair and maintenance of electrical/mechanical systems
Experience with R&D design and fabrication
Proficiency with SolidWorks and/or CREO
Demonstrated experience working to Operating Procedures, ES&H and Engineered Safety requirements
Experience with construction-like activities
Ability to work safely, independently and with minimum supervision
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as time management, conflict resolution and critical problem-solving skills.
A desire to improve current skillsets and learn new skillsets
About Our Team
The Experimental Operations Department 1533 provides an array of capabilities and services for Sandia's Validation and Qualification Sciences Experimental Complex (VQSEC) which enables it to accomplish its mission as the center of excellence for environmental testing within the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration Nuclear Weapons Complex. These full life cycle capabilities include engineering design and fabrication of test hardware and fixtures; structural and thermal analysis supporting experimental design; hazard and system safety analysis; execution of tests and experiments in controlled mechanical, energetic, and thermal environments, including set up and dismantlement; and operation and maintenance of one-of-a-kind facilities including the Aerial Cable Facility, Burn Site, Rocket Sled Track Complex, and Thermal Test Complex. Department personnel collaborate with test directors, test and safety engineers, and instrumentation, photometric, and data acquisition personnel to ensure the infrastructure and facilities necessary to conduct subsystem and system level tests and experiments in normal and abnormal environments are available. Additionally, the department provides mission assurance in the form of risk assessments and failure mode analysis; design engineering processes support; leadership in the integration of standard business practices across the VQSEC; administration of the ES&H program for the Engineering Sciences Center (1500); management of the VQSEC test support contractors and training program; and configuration management of VQSEC moderate hazard facilities.
