As a Model Maker with the AR/VR prototype team, you will work closely with Design and Engineering teams to develop concept and appearance models. You must demonstrate an understanding of technical skills and knowledge in a variety of prototyping processes at a consistent high level of quality and speed.

This position requires strong conceptual development and the proficient use of various hand tools, mills and lathes. The incumbent must be able to work independently, have a high attention to detail, be customer oriented and possess strong problem-solving skills. A good working knowledge and ability to take files through the RP process from set up, operation, part clean up and fitting. This person must be a self-starter, well organized and have strong communication skills.


  • Create models of concepts and products for evaluation, presentation and focus group studies.

Collaborate with the Industrial Design and Engineering teams to ensure models and prototypes meet their requirements.

Engage with the Rapid Prototyping team to resolve complex design challenges and improve model making process.

Finish, paint and assemble models to a high level of quality.

Use hand sketches, computer aided designs (CAD) to create 3D models according to established specifications.


  • 5+ years of experience in hand finishing, painting and assembly visual and appearance models.

Experience in working with cross-functional teams including Engineering, Product Design, Research, etc.

Experience and knowledge of the full spectrum of model making and prototype development process, such as: 3D printing, CNC machining, functional prototypes, and appearance models with aesthetic fit, finishes color matching at a production-level appearance.

Experience devising and constructing tools, dies, molds, jigs, and fixtures, or modify existing tools and equipment to achieve outcome.

The Model Maker is a craftsperson responsible for creating three dimensional representations of designs or concepts utilizing advanced skills in fabrication techniques, material selection and finishing. This position provides leadership and training to others and delegates tasks, as needed for best use of skill set, to meet customer delivery requirements. Ability to multi-task, attention to detail and commitment to success are required. Primary Job Functions * Communicate with Project Manager and Sales to understand customer requirements and expectations * Interpret CAD files to create models that meet customer requirements and expectations * Demonstrate experience with painting all types of coatings to include Sherwin Williams Polane, Cardinal, PPG Base/clear, Shielding, Soft-touch and others. Also understand spray techniques to create textures and sheens as required * Demonstrate experience with efficient and effective masking techniques for painting or protection of models * Demonstrate experience in color blending and matching to achieve the customers desired color effect * Apply graphics using rub-down transfer process * Create silicone molds and soft tooling from patterns and cast urethane and silicone parts * Finish parts from all 3D printing processes, including but not limited to SLA, SLS, DMP, MJP, and FDM * Apply media blasting to parts for preparation and finishing * Apply creative problem solving skills to create solutions as needed to enhance the model for ease of assembly, disassembly, mechanical motions with fasteners, interlocks, adhesives, hook and loop, etc. * Application of fiberglass techniques for lightweight structural components * Application of lighting effects to include LED systems and backlighting experience * Set-up and operate ovens to assist with post curing and paint curing to improve properties and speed delivery time * Research and develop new fabrication techniques to simplify the process or find ways to develop or assemble the model efficiently * Responsible for final assembly and proper functionality of model * Demonstrate ability to safely operate all woodworking equipment, media blasters, lathes, mills, power tools and other shop equipment * Maintain a clean and well-organized work area at all times * Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating constructively with co-workers, customers, and management * Follow operational procedures at all times * Adhere to 3D safety policies and procedures at all times Education and Training High School diploma or equivalent preferred Experience * 10 years' relevant industry experience in model making and high-end finishing required * Minimum 5 years' experience responsible for the finishing of 3D printed parts and final product delivered to customer required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities * Ability to read and interpret CAD drawings * Thorough understanding of all aspects of model making * Working knowledge of HVLP Systems * Working knowledge of various coatings – Sherwin Williams Polane, Cardinal, PPG, and others * Working knowledge of how to achieve various finishes, textures, and sheens * Basic understanding of machining * Ability to deliver clear, concise direction when leading a team * Self-directed; works well independently and as a team member * Ability to take direction and constructive feedback; have a desire to learn and grow * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills * Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail 3D Systems Seattle WA
