We are currently seeking a Model Maker to join our team. As a Model Maker, you will be responsible for constructing full-size and to-scale precision models and displays.


  • Under close supervision, provides 3D model and visualizationservices to HOK's design teams.

  • Translates design/schematic drawing sets and CAD-based construction documents into 3D models.

  • May translate computer models into physical models by preparing data for architectural model shop equipment.

  • Reads blueprints, Auto Cad files, 3D digital models, topological maps, drawings, or written specifications to determine project delivery requirements.

  • Uses machines and tools such as table saws, band saws, planers, jointers, hand-tools, etc. to create models and displays.

  • Applies finishes such as shellac, lacquer or wax, etc. to models and displays.

  • Responsible for adherence to project budget and schedule.

  • Maintains current knowledge of prototyping, materials,manufacturing techniques, software solutions and incorporates this knowledge into project work.

  • Archives projects in a systematic and accessible manner.

  • Takes personal responsibility for fostering a green workplace through sustainable work practices.

  • Fosters a culture of external and internal client service.

Required Skills

  • Must be a creative problem solver, detail-oriented and have a willingness to learn on the job.

  • Ability to link abstract or unrelated ideas, visualize in 3 Dimensions and poses a sense of scale.

  • Ability to conceptually generate new and fresh ideas along with a genuine enthusiasm and interest in design, 3D visualizations and presentation.

  • Physical ability to handle materials and tools, stand for long periods of time, conduct repetitive hand motions and effectively coordinate hands and eyes.

  • Basic knowledge in determining material appropriateness, design layout, model type and purpose.

  • Basic knowledge of machines and tools used in the creation of models; including their intended uses, and maintenance to include but not limited to: table saw, band saw, planer, jointer.

  • Basic understanding of finishing techniques including coatings such as shellac, lacquer, or wax.

  • Basic knowledge of HOK MSDS safety procedures for shop and individual tool use.

  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and architectural visualization imagery software such as AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.

  • Proficiency in Rhinoceros 3D, Revit, SketchUp, and NewForma preferred.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to work in team environment.

Required Experience

  • Minimum high school diploma required. Bachelor's degree in architecture, interior design, graphic design, industrial design, fine arts or other related field of study preferred.

  • 1 year previous architectural modeling, prototyping, graphics, arts or wood shop experience preferred.

  • Complete a first-aid course within the first month of hire.
