Argonne National Laboratory has an exciting opportunity for a Model Fabricator to work within our Central Shops Department.

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Work from drawings, freehand sketches, or verbal instructions.

  • Plans and lays out projects and determines materials necessary.

  • Set up and operate power sheet metal fabricating machines such as brakes, rolls, shears, nibblers, Strippit, and tube benders.

  • May fabricate planes, curves, curved surfaces, spherical sections and compound angles, making all developments and layouts to close tolerances.

  • Uses any material which may be fabricated, using sheet metal equipment and techniques.

  • Solders, spot welds, rivets, fabricates ventilation and exhaust duct systems from aluminum, galvanized, stainless steel, and PVC.

  • Performs miscellaneous duties as required.

  • Must work in a manner which is safe for the employee and others in the area.

  • Limited interaction with scientific groups.

Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Four-year apprenticeship or equivalent certification and at least three years' experience as a journeyman Precision Sheet Metal Model Maker.

  • Experience with CNC metal fabricating equipment and using Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software desirable.

VIEW JOBS 3/16/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-06-14T00:00 Under the direction of group leader, responsible engineer/scientist, and/or designer, uses CAD and 3D modeling techniques to augment concept design packages which fulfill established design requirements. This includes (but is not limited to) design layout drawings, details, supporting calculations/documentation, material selection, welding, piping, etc., symbol usage, drawing tolerance determination, methods of fabrication and complex assembly drawings. Position Requirements * Approximately 7 years diversified experience in producing mechanical (machine) designs for unique mechanical equipment or equivalent. This includes checking and preparation of original design layouts, handbook calculations, and complete fabrication drawings for 1) electro-mechanical equipment; 2) equipment support structures; 3) piping and support systems; and 4) special purpose machines such as accelerators. * Experience with a full function CAD system such as Pro/E or AutoCAD is required. * Three dimensional (3-D) solid CAD design experience is a must, Pro/E experience preferred. * Some knowledge of vacuum, magnet, and radio-frequency technologies is desirable. Use of personal computing type software helpful.
