Under the supervision of the site administrator, the Special Day Class teacher provides students with disabilities a program that enables him/her to reach his/her fullest physical, emotional, psychological, and behavioral potential. Provide consultation, coordination, planning, curricular resources, evaluation, remediation, and direct instructional services for students with special needs placed in a special day class.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach students with moderate to severe disabilities in a special day class the portions of a basic educational program that are in keeping with individual abilities and place major emphasis on those elements, which develop the maximum amount of self-reliance and functional skills independence.

  • Provide training, domestic, recreational, leisure, and community and vocational activities in an educational environment.

  • Blend basic skills including speech and language, motor, academics, and social skills into functional activities.

  • Provide integrated learning opportunities in appropriate subjects while implementing alternative and augmentative communication systems (i.e., PECS, etc.)

  • Train and utilize instructional aides, community volunteers, and cross-age tutors to assist with instruction in a variety of environments in an effective manner.

  • Confer frequently with parents and professional staff member on the planning, implementing, and evaluating of each student's progress.

  • Maintain ongoing communication with parents/guardians and outside professional consultants and agencies.

  • Maintain appropriate professional relationship with the school staff to facilitate the concept of mainstreaming and integration of students on a regular basis.

  • Act as the primary case manager for Special Education purposes for students in the class.

  • Serve as a member of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting as is deemed appropriate.

  • Perform those duties that are normally a part of the school staff activity.

  • Continue professional growth in the knowledge and practices of the education of students with special education needs.

  • Stay knowledgeable of the changes in laws and regulations as they pertain to students with special education needs.

  • Use data collection to support functional skills curriculum instruction and to demonstrate student achievement.

  • Perform personal hygiene and adaptive behavior activities for students with moderate to severe disabilities (i.e., diaper changing, tube feeding, etc.)

  • Establish physical and classroom environment that addresses student's physical and behavioral needs, while incorporating behavioral intervention strategies to reinforce, teach, and regulate student behavior and social skills.

  • Implement Behavior Support Plans (BSP) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).

  • Perform all other obligations mandated by laws or Board policy, and other tasks assigned by the Administration.
