Assist in patient care delivery and provides unit support through a variety of functions. Work collaboratively with the nursing/patient care services staff (to include but not limited to physical and occupational therapists, inpatient advanced practice providers, patient navigator, nursing educators, etc.) establish an early mobilization plan for patients, ensure the patients have proper equipment (CPM, ice machines, DME). Use patient care handling equipment when assisting patients to minimize risk of injury. In addition, orders and maintains proper DME and other supplies, applies bracing as needed.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide basic care needs to patients and make visual observations reporting abnormalities in accordance with established procedures and policies, escalates patient observation and direct care information to patient's RN, PT/OT, APP Navigator or provider as necessary.

  • Use the multidisciplinary plan of care as a guide for individualized patient care and teaching as directed by nursing, APP, PT or provider. Work as a team member with care team and other healthcare workers to provide care. Identify discharge barriers and communicate.

  • Assist with or provide activities of daily living (ADLs) as necessary

  • Assist with early mobility according to PT/OT and nursing care plans and coordinating exercises according to provider pathways

  • Assists physical therapist and/or nursing in providing a collaborative team approach to early mobility

  • Administer minor treatments and procedures such as, but not limited to, sterile and non-sterile dressing changes; safely apply heat/cooling measures; perform surgical preps, perform application and cast care; apply Buck's traction, CPM machine, sequential stocking.

  • Provide bed exercises, including range of motion and positioning, and assist patient in ambulating when necessary.

  • Maintain prescribed standards of cleanliness and organization for assigned work areas replenishing stock supplies as necessary.

  • Remove faulty, non-functioning equipment from service, label, and report to the appropriate personnel. Order supplies and equipment as needed. Enter equipment repair requests in appropriate system.

  • Work with a trained second person to provide assistance in the safe lifting and transferring of high-risk patients and patients that have been identified as appropriate for this service.

  • Utilize proper body mechanics, lifting techniques, and observes hospital protocols.

  • Utilize patient handling equipment, transfer devices, and protective equipment in compliance with hospital policies, vendor specifications, and patient handling and transporting protocols.

  • Maintain patient and employee/workplace safety as a basic premise of all tasks performed.

  • Must have the ability to recognize the needs and concerns of members, co-workers, and physicians while maintaining positive working relationships

  • Teaches splinting and bracing clinics for inpatient and clinic staff to include, but not limited to: nursing, PCAs, residents and others as needed.

  • When needed covers ambulatory clinics as PCA/Ortho tech.

  • Provides education to patient/caregiver on use of DMA (canes, crutches, braces, etc.)

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant and/or Medical Assistant.

  • Certified with the National Board of Orthopedic Technologists (NBCOT)

  • BCLS Certification

Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • One year of Orthopedic Tech experience.

  • Experience including exposure to cast application and removal.

  • Demonstrated ability with cast and traction set up.

  • While performing essential duties and responsibilities, incumbent must have the ability to physically work extensively with high-risk patients (e.g. orthopedic, surgical and elderly) and specialty equipment utilized to mobilize these patients.

  • An understanding of human anatomy, basic medical terminology, and rehabilitation principles.

  • Computer skills for use of EMR.

Preferred:

  • Prior rehabilitation experience with mobility of patients.
