Wilkes University invites qualified individuals to apply for the role of part-time Mobile Educator in the Science in Motion (SIM) Program. SIM is a STEM outreach program funded by the PA Department of Education and is part of the Pennsylvania Science in Motion Consortium centered at Juniata College. Through a resource sharing model between Wilkes and participating secondary schools in northeastern Pennsylvania, SIM provides middle and high school students and educators with access to advanced hands-on laboratories that incorporate technology, instrumentation, and supplies all at no cost to the educator or their school district.

The part-time Mobile Educator will work a maximum of 25 hours per week from January 8, 2024 through June 14, 2024, generally between the hours of 8am and 4pm. This position reports directly to the SIM Mobile Education Coordinator. Previous STEM teaching experience is a plus, but is not required. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Timely preparation of standard Biology, Chemistry and Physics lab kits including all necessary chemical supplies, equipment, and paperwork.

  • Delivery of equipment, supplies, and curriculum directly to our participating teachers using Wilkes SIM vehicles. A valid PA driver's license and Wilkes driver certification are required.

  • In-class visitation to assist teachers in the presentation of lab materials and activities.

  • Participation in various outreach events and activities at local schools and sponsoring institutions.

  • Participation in the Wilkes SIM-hosted summer teacher workshop.

  • Maintaining proper paperwork and equipment inventory.

Position requirements include:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Education with a science emphasis, or a STEM major;

  • Ability to precisely follow laboratory prep procedures and work safely with chemicals and lab equipment;

  • Physically able to lift and carry up to 40lbs;

  • Ability to instruct middle and high school students on a variety of STEM topics;

  • Ability to obtain and maintain the necessary background checks and clearances for access to schools and classrooms;

  • A valid PA driver's license and ability to pass requirements to safely operate Wilkes SIM vehicle;

  • Ability to work independently AND as a team member in a fast-paced environment;

  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends;

  • Ability to set a positive example for students.

  • Previous STEM teaching experience is a plus, but is not required.
