The Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) Strategic Growth (SG) Team is seeking a Mission Architect to perform Mission Architecting, Engineering and Analysis activities across the Mission Systems portfolio. This role will also advise NGMS senior leadership and senior DOD customers on the capabilities needed to solve our customers' most challenging problems. This position reports to the NGMS Director for Mission Analytics and Capability Strategy in Strategic Growth.

The Mission Architect must have experience and an in-depth understanding of the US DOD's most challenging problems, relevant concepts of operations, mission threads, mission engineering threads and knowledge to conceive solutions through relevant systems architectures. The Mission Architect will assess, address and further develop operational and technical capability gaps and the solutions to close those gaps. The Mission Architect will lead thorough studies and analyses and conceive development of new capabilities to efficiently close those gaps in ways adoptable by our development teams, customers and government stakeholders. The Mission Architect will use outstanding communication skills to conceptualize, describe and advocate these solutions to support business development, key captures, investment decision making and inform senior DOD leaders.

The successful leader must be able to:

  • understand and assess how our DOD customers' critical mission challenges intersect with NGMS's capabilities and business objectives,
  • decompose missions and requirements into high-level business and mission objectives with actionable tasks that demonstrate NGC's discriminating capabilities and their value in solving customer mission challenges,
  • provide guidance to the development and support of key mission engineering efforts such as mission architectural baselines and products, systems architecture models, physics based models, operational scenarios, simulation efforts, analysis results and deliveries for key customer engagements
  • incorporate analysis results and realizations into development teams' investment planning
  • work with business strategic planners, business development, engineering teams and mission analysts through multi-disciplined, matrixed teams
  • enable, assist and contribute to mission engineering efforts across business units, divisions and Northrop Grumman Sectors
  • balance multiple priorities, ensure and report on the achievement of explicit, time-bound business objectives

The position will be responsible for 1) developing and realizing solutions to customer mission and operational challenges; 2) understanding and translating defense strategy, policy, budgeting and acquisitions imperatives for joint service and international systems through customer and government stakeholders interaction; 3) engaging with strategy and business development teams, program leads and engineering experts to strategize, plan and budget for solutions development; 4) applying operational and technical experience to advance development of cutting-edge systems to serve warfighters' needs; 5) planning and managing budget and project execution across multiple business lines with associated reporting.

The selected candidate for this role will be expected to work primarily onsite or in a hybrid role at one of Northrop Grumman's primary locations such as Linthicum, MD, Falls Church, VA, Melbourne, FL, Los Angeles, CA, San Diego, CA, or Rolling Meadows, IL.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree and 10+ years professional or military experience OR a Master's and 8+ years professional or military experience

  • Military operational experience in uniformed service, civil service or contract support roles

  • System engineering experience on a DoD program

  • Program management experience

  • Strong communication skills are required, to include the ability to generate and present material to customers and senior executives.

  • U.S citizen and active US DoD Secret clearance (in scope) with the ability to qualify for access to Special Access Programs (SAPs) and TS/SCI.

  • Travel to other company and customer facilities may be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mission and system architecting experience including functional decompositions, systems allocation and their relationship to a WBS

  • Familiarity with DoDAF operational, systems and technical views and their useful purpose

  • Experience utilizing MBSE, SySML/UML depictions or CAMEO analysis

  • Experience establishing a SOA

  • Conceptualize applying guidance in the OUSD(R&E) Mission Engineering Guide to design of studies for industry and government decisionmaking

  • Experience incorporating mission engineering, modeling, simulation and analysis into program decisionmaking

  • Able to work across a variety of programs with different objectives and schedules

  • Demonstrated ability to design an execution plan to achieve strategic objectives

  • Able to summarize key issues to brief senior business leaders and enable strategic decision-making

  • Program management experience with cost, schedule and performance responsibilities

  • Systems engineering credentials including but not limited to undergraduate or graduate degrees or certification such as INCOSE CSEP

  • Experience writing, updating or designing new CONOPS, TTPs, DRMs and associated use cases

  • Experience planning or executing program progress through the Systems Engineering V

  • Accomplishing Val-Ver activities

  • Preparing for or executing OT&E

  • Experience providing both technical and strategic checks on systems and mission engineering support to key programs business development, capture and execution

  • Understanding of DoD 5000 acquisition principles and activities, the PPBES system and major events within a formal acquisition program

  • Familiarity with International business development, foreign military sales, and export regulations

  • Basic technical understanding of RF, EO/IR or communications systems and their applicability to missions

  • Demonstrated ability to both lead and function as part of integrated teams

Salary Range: $172,500.00 - $258,700.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
