Job Description

Promote activities designed to maintain and to improve safety awareness throughout the mine property to include Emergency Response Teams (ERT) and site safety programs. Support implementation of policies and procedures under the Health & Safety Program. Assist in safety audits under the Kinross Gold Corporation Environmental Health and Safety Management System.

Job Responsibilities

1.Assist in establishing goals and objectives regarding the development and implementation of Health and Safety programs.

2.Actively develop, promote, and participate in company safety programs.

3.Take a lead role in the development and implementation of emergency preparedness policy and procedures.

4.Take a lead role in the development and implementation of an Emergency Response Team (ERT) policy in addition to procedure and coordination of ERT activities. This would include, but is not limited to, incident response, training sessions, equipment purchases, team member recruiting, special functions, etc.

5.Provide information to supervisors, employees, and contractors regarding safe operating procedures.

6.Participate in department audits and facilitate implementation of audit recommendations.

7.Inspect work areas regularly in all departments and solicit ideas from employees regarding safety issues. Discuss areas of concern with employees and the supervisor of the areas concerned. Take immediate action on issues which could jeopardize personal safety or which could cause significant loss of capital resources.

8.Exchange information between employees, contractors, and appropriate outside agencies on a regular basis in order to be aware of and respond quickly to safety issues.

9.Coordinate with department heads the communication of injuries and incident statistics to the appropriate outside agencies.



  1. Assist with the development of trend analysis from on-site database.

  2. Establish and maintain good relations with peers, supervisors, and employees and promote positive attitudes, safe work practices and adherence to safe work standards. Lead by example, provide guidance, and motivate employees to work safely.

  3. Assist in workers comp case management

  4. Keep skills and knowledge up-to-date.

  5. Participate in departmental safety meeting and lead meetings when requested.

  6. Ensure the appropriate safety notices are posted in strategic locations.

  7. Assist in the development and administration of group and individual safety awards.

  8. Available for the Health and Safety on-call roster.

  9. Must be knowledgeable in all applicable sections of the 30CFR and other relevant standards.

  10. Available to respond to medical facility or mine site in an emergency.

  11. Punctuality and regular attendance are required.

  12. Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to, safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies.

  13. Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.

  14. Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the state.

  15. Work without significant risk of harm to self and others.

  16. Maintain accurate records and files.

  17. Consistent exercise of discretion and judgment in performance.

  18. Demonstrate professionalism and represent the company philosophy and goals.

  19. Perform other related functions as assigned by supervisor.


Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple and mathematical calculations and keep records.

  • State of Alaska Paramedic certification or National Registered Paramedic with ability to obtain State of Alaska certification is required.

Skills

  • Fire, high angle rope rescue, confined space rescue, vehicle extrication training, or technical skills preferred but not required.

  • Completion of technical courses related to mine rescue techniques; documentation of training required.

  • Ability to work independently and also as a member of the management team.

  • Strong verbal, written, and analytical skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.

  • Good working knowledge and skill with a P.C. utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs.

  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.

  • Must be available for shift work, overtime, holidays, and weekends.

  • Progression through wage scale is contingent upon satisfactory completion of attached checklists.
