The Millwork Co-Op Student assists the Millwork Shop departments in creating and assembling products made of wood and/or related materials. Assisting with layouts and assembly of products such as: doors, frames, trim, moldings, cabinets, fixtures, and equipment) from rough sketches, drawings, or as directed. Providing assistance from inital drawings, set-up, and custom creation all the way to finish and shipping preparation.
Functions and Responsibilities:
(requires supervision or job shadow at all times)
Review of blueprints or drawing of projects to be constructed
Assisting with gluing and fitting together assemblies/sub-assemblies using dowels, screws, clamps or other devices to form complete units.
May assist with finishing surfaces and joints of articles with sandpaper and scrapers.
Installing hardware such as hinges, catches, and drawer pulls.
Review and assist with the fabrication special wooden parts and components as needed.
Participating and actively working with others as a team, taking and accepting direction as given.
Learning and development regarding product quality, accuracy and craftsmanship of SSM standards.
Maintaining productivity, reliability and demonstrating initiative.
May assist in commercial assembly as well as maintaining the shop.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Maintains and adheres to safety requirements and standards of the millwork trade.
Familiarity with woodworking tools and equipment.
Interest in building projects using various joinery techniques common to the trade.
Familiarity with shop drawings, sketches and diagrams.
Ability to assist with various projects with assistance and supervision.
Ability to work and interact well with SSM staff and vendors.
Ability follow verbal and/or written instructions.
May include the ability to perform mathematical operations.
Education and Experience Required:
Current enrollment in Carpentry/Cabinetry program; Vocational HS preferred
2-3 Years of program enrollment
Experience in a woodworking, mill or cabinet program using hand and power woodworking machinery and tools in the layout and assembly of products made from wood and related materials.
