Headquartered in centrally located Chehalis, Washington, Alta operates fence board sawmills, reload facilities, and log yards in various Northwest rural communities, including Morton, Shelton, Amanda Park, Winlock in Washington, and Naples, Bonners Ferry, and Lewiston in Idaho.

The Role:

As the Mill Superintendent, you will be responsible for developing and leading team meetings and training, meeting productivity and reliability goals, identifying safety, quality, and production issues, coordinating activities with the maintenance team, and proactively addressing all concerns. You will also lead the team by proactively resolving employee issues, building teamwork, and ensuring adherence to all applicable site policies and procedures fairly and consistently.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for daily operations and production by directing and coordinating sawmill activities to obtain optimum efficiency and economy of operations and maximize profits by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.

  • Actively manage and reduce downtime through quick analysis of options and orchestrating solutions.

  • Continually assess performance, productivity, and skills of the mill. Recommend and initiate solutions to prioritize maintenance and production activities.

  • Ensure that training is scheduled and appropriately received by the crew.

  • Participate in interviews and selection of new hires.

  • Assist with coordinating and managing significant mill projects in collaboration with the Mill Manager and Project Engineering team to help ensure they are completed on time and within budget.

  • To meet the goals Alta's leadership team agreed upon, the mill must achieve optimum employee levels with the least overhead costs.

  • Coordinate and direct various programs at the mill with other departments essential to manufacturing procedures (e.g., training, safety, housekeeping, employee engagement, security, etc.)

  • Take corrective action as necessary on time and by company policy and procedures.

  • Coordinates activities of divisions or departments, such as operating, manufacturing, engineering, planning, sales, maintenance, or research and development, to effect operational efficiency and economy.

  • Directs and coordinates the promotion of products manufactured or services performed to develop new markets, increase market share, and obtain a competitive position in the industry.

  • Analyzes division or department budget requests to identify areas where reductions can be made and allocates operating budget.

  • Setting and enforcing safety expectations for the department, striving for no injuries.

  • Monitoring and identifying action plans to improve departmental key performance indicators such as no injuries, improving customer quality, driving productivity improvement in rewinding and sheeting, reducing work-in-process inventory levels, reducing complaints, reducing packaging costs, and improving product yields.

  • Promotes organizations in industry, manufacturing, and trade associations.

  • Perform miscellaneous duties and other projects as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED

  • A bachelor's degree (or higher) in Business, Forestry, or a related technical field is preferred.

  • At least 3+ years of leadership experience in lumber or wood products manufacturing

  • Demonstrated safety leadership within a manufacturing environment

  • Knowledge of lumber grading procedures

  • Customer focused approach

  • Ability to lead and empower work teams

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Proven employee relations skills

  • Good communication and facilitation skills

  • Ability to plan, organize, and analyze results

Work Environment

This role will operate in a professional office, log yards, and sawmill. While performing the duties of this job, employees will regularly be exposed to machinery and moving mechanical parts. This position will often be exposed to noise, hazards, airborne particulates, and temperature changes in indoor and outdoor weather conditions.

Position Type/Travel

This is a full-time position, and overtime work may be required as projects or job duties demand. Travel may be required occasionally.

  • This position requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping for extended lengths of time.

  • The employee must frequently use hands and fingers to handle or feel, climb, or balance.

Position Type/Travel/Schedule

This position is exempt per FLSA guidelines and not eligible for overtime. A typical schedule requires the ability to work 40 hours a week. Flexibility to work evenings or weekends to accommodate critical goals and objectives may be necessary.

  • Pay Range: $105,500 - $118,000 per year (starting wage will be dependent on qualifications and experience)
