SRI seeks committed and passionate Military Funeral Honors State Coordinators to provide critical services to military members, Department of the Army civilians, and their Families.

Overview: The Army National Guard (ARNG) Military Funeral Honors program renders professional and dignified military funeral honors, in accordance with service tradition, to all eligible veterans when requested by an authorized family member. The Military Funeral Honors program has developed a comprehensive network within communities which quickly responds to the needs of deceased Service members and their Families. Our goal is to reassure Survivors that they remain valued members of the Army Family. The Army National Guard (ARNG) is a geographically dispersed force whose members do not have the benefit of installation-based support for Military Funeral Honors and caring for survivors of our fallen heroes. The need to provide Military Funeral Honors to geographically dispersed service members and Families is ongoing and increases during periods of mobilization, active service, and state call-ups.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Serves the State as a Subject Matter Expert on Military Funeral Honors functions and requirements.

  • Provides general planning, coordination, and budget analysis to the State Military Authority.

  • Maintains access, conducts reviews, identifies trends, and analyzes Veteran and Military Funeral Honors State data to identify needs and properly guide, advise, and recommend courses of action related to the program. Coordinates, plans, and develops statewide operations for the Military Funeral Honors Program.

  • Drafts, reviews, advises, and recommends on Military Funeral Honors Program policies, SOPs, and objectives in coordination with the ARNG Program Manager and/or State/Territory Military Authority.

  • Coordinates, plans, and develops statewide operations for the military Funeral Honors Program.

  • Assists in the development of related charts, graphs, briefings, and other presentation aids. Conducts briefings and updates State Military Leadership on issues related to Military Funeral Honors.

  • Serves as a single point of contact for the State in reference to Military Funeral Honors requested support. Maintains a capability to respond to requests within a 24-hour timeframe.

  • Ensures missions conducted, supported, and non-supported are tracked and recorded in the Military Funeral Honors database. Establishes systems and databases to identify/track the level of support and fiscal cost associated with each Military Funeral Honors ceremony provided.

  • Coordinates, advises, recommends, and guides an active recruiting and retention program for the State/Territory Military Funeral Honors program. Actively implements this to maintain, train and certify personnel to support MFH requests.

  • Assists and oversees the department training of programs and exercises related to the performance of State Honor Guard ceremonies.

  • Monitors and evaluates the Honor Guard performance and provides recommendations to the State Military Authority for conformance with all NGB/National Guidelines and regulations relating to Military Funeral Honors and improvement of service. The objective is to observe five percent (5%) or more of monthly missions.

  • Ensures Veterans and Service Members IAW State and Federal law receive honors.

  • Assists in developing and managing the annual budget for the Military Funeral Honors program.

  • Maintains training records on all Funeral Detail personnel.

  • Develops budget requirements specific to their state; assists and coordinates recommendations regarding budget management for the state to remain compliant with all applicable National and State funding guidelines.

  • Establishes, develops, and maintains rapport with mutually supporting outside agencies; to include Army Installation Casualty Assistance Centers (CACs), other Branches of Service CACs, Veteran Service Organizations, funeral homes, and cemeteries.

  • Coordinates with and ensures all Accreditation Process, Policies and Procedures are followed for Veteran Service Organizations (VSO) and provides complete quality control of pay allowances, reimbursement, and stipends as required for VSO and National Guard member participation for State Military Authority approval and submission.

  • Coordinates with the Military Funeral Honors State Coordinator and/or NCOIC to obtain a copy of the updated Military Funeral Honors training video, training flags, training certificates, and lapel pins for VSOs.

  • Verifies that all data inputted into the MFH Database is 100% accurate and complete. Verifies and oversees the processing of payroll and travel claims to ensure they are accurate, valid, and conducted in a timely manner in support of the Military Authority.

Required Skills, Education, Experience, and Abilities:

  • Must have served or currently serving with the military or supported the military in some capacity. This military experience is required - Please do not apply if you do not have military experience.

  • Must possess the knowledge of applicable military regulations, policies, and directives pertaining to MFH ceremonies.

  • Knowledge of military drill & ceremonies techniques.

  • Must have a broad-based knowledge, experience, and skills in the areas of military funerals, military personnel, casualty assistance, and an understanding of the Army National Guard.

  • Be a self-starter and be able to execute responsibilities with minimum oversight.

  • Ability to plan and organize work activities to achieve established program objectives goals.

  • Exceptional leadership, communication, time management, facilitation, and organizational skills.

  • Must demonstrate knowledge of internet interaction, use of government databases, reports preparation, regulation interpretation and report analysis.

  • Be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Possess a current and valid state driver's license.

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English proficiently.

  • High School Degree, some college is preferred.

  • Be a US Citizen.

Upon Hiring, Military Funeral Honors State Coordinators will receive training in the following:

  • Military Funeral Honors eligibility requirements.

  • Setting up the squad/drill team.

  • Graveside services for casketed and cremated remains.

  • Honor Guard firing of the volley.

  • Bugler or proper use of the ceremonial bugle (or high-quality CD of Taps).

  • Folding and presenting the flag.

  • How to maintain training records.
