The Milieu Counselor engages with program participants as well as program staff in a therapeutic milieu. The focus of the Milieu Counselor is to provide supportive interventions to participants utilizing case management, individual supportive counseling, and group intervention with an emphasis on crisis intervention and resolution. In addition, the milieu counselor assists with the day-to-day needs of the program and its participants. The milieu counselor may also assist with the admission, transfer, and discharge of participants according to established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Establish a therapeutic relationship with program participants

  • Understand participants' characteristics and triggers using a trauma informed approach to prevent loss of behavioral control or decompensation.

  • Utilize crisis intervention techniques to mitigate risks

  • Provides individual supportive counseling and case management services designed to identify strengths, problem solve and support coping skill development

  • Leads or co-leads group interventions focused on various topics related to crisis, coping, problem solving and anger management

  • Facilities recreational group activities such as art, current events and games

  • Under the direction of the program manager and RN, manages the day to day operational needs of the residence such as ordering food, assuring supplies are available and interfacing with other ancillary departments as needed such as housekeeping.

  • Identifies warning signs and alerts professional staff in a timely manner to changes in patient status, mood or behavior in an effort to reduce risk of behavioral acting out

  • Documents participant progress in daily notes

  • Maintains records of purchases, requisitions and other business needs of the program

  • Participates in team meetings, community meetings and planning meetings for participants.

  • Participates in debriefing after incidents with staff and participants.

Organizational/Managerial

  • Maintains participant/employee confidentiality in all activities

  • Participates in program quality improvement projects

Educational

  • Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements

  • Participates in supervision

  • Participates in Grand Rounds and department based in-service presentations

Communication

  • Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others

  • Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community

  • Displays a professional and respectful demeanor at all times

  • Maintains positive interpersonal skills with patients visitors and staff

  • Adheres to MSHS legal and ethical standards

  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree - in Human Services field preferred

  • One-year experience working in human services field. Internship/Volunteer/Student teaching counts towards experience.

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $33.3226 - $33.8559 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
