POSITION SUMMARY

The St. Louis Catholic School Teacher is a person of faith and prayer who witnesses to the gospel through his/her speech, actions, and attitudes. The teacher is also a community builder, a leader in Christian service, and an active participant in the worshipping community. The role of the Catholic School Teacher is to provide a Christian environment where each child can experience learning and living fully integrated in the light of faith.

The teacher conducts, under the supervision of the school principal, an education program for students in the 5th -8th-grade level, following the stated philosophy and objectives of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois schools in general and St. Louis Catholic School in particular while adhering to the required standards set forth by the Illinois Board of Education and the Western Catholic Education Association.

  • DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepares teaching materials and uses available teaching aids to present subject matter.
  • Explains subject matter, makes assignments, corrects papers, and hears oral presentations.
  • Prepares, administers, and conducts assessments and tests and records results. Looks for irregularities in results that may hinder growth and development in students.
  • Maintains accuracy in recording attendance, test results, and other data for the permanent records.
  • Maintains an attractive classroom that evidences a progressive program in academic, social, and manipulative skills and religious education.
  • Maintains orderly conduct and promotes self-discipline among the students.
  • Supervises (at all times) all students assigned to him/her by the principal.
  • Evaluate the learning capabilities of the students concerning the subject matter and determine the method, amount, complexity, and kind of instruction that will achieve maximum progress.
  • Counsels students, discusses academic and behavioral difficulties with parents, and suggests remedial action and special referrals as needed.
  • Uses available opportunities for self-improvement, both professionally and personally.
  • Helps plan school masses, prayer services, and other school activities as needed.
  • Assumes responsibility for materials used in the classroom or school facility, as well as the proper appearance and cleanliness of the classroom and other areas of the school as assigned.
  • Promotes quality student performance by following the all-school discipline plan and teaching the positive and productive behavior curriculum.
  • Comply with all rules and training St. Louis Catholic School sets forth.
  • Plans and carries out a class mission project.
  • Performs non-classroom duties as assigned and participates in school activities.

Qualifications

III. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possesses an Associate's Degree and State of Illinois Certification to Sub and be willing to work towards their Bachelor's Degree in education, a Bachelor's Degree and State Certification (preferred), or a Master's Degree in a field that can relate directly to education.
  • Supports St. Louis School's philosophy, mission, objectives, and policies.
  • Exhibits loyalty in all working relationships with parents, the principal, the pastor, and other contacts.
  • Respect and maintain the confidentiality of personal and restricted information regarding students, faculty, and school.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and uses appropriate communication skills.
  • Must be present on all days school is in session and in-service days.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Practicing Catholic in full communion with the teachings of the Church. Witness of the Good News of Christ.
  • Emphasis or experience in English Language Arts or Literature curriculums.
  • Understands, enjoys, and is sensitive to the needs of this age group.
  • Knows and understands fire and safety regulations and encourages the students to practice safe practices and good health.
  • Creates a welcoming atmosphere in the classroom and other assigned areas.
  • Possesses a competence in his or her field and maintains this through further education and in-service training.

Salary/Benefits

  • Is directly responsible to the principal in all school-related activities.
  • Works cooperatively with other faculty members, school staff, the principal, the pastor, parents, and Diocesan Office of Education representatives.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Has access to varied instructional materials and equipment.
  • Standing and walking for 8 hours a day with minimal breaks for sitting.
  • Louis Catholic School maintains a salary scale for teaching staff based on years of experience and education ranging from $34,000 to $90,000 for full-time staff. More specific information will be provided upon request.

VII. STANDARDS FOR MEASURING PERFORMANCE

  • Students are well-adjusted to the school situation, show an interest in learning, and consider school a necessary part of their lives.
  • Maximum progress achievable by each student is generally evident and verified by results of standardized tests, etc.
  • The principal evaluates teachers through formal and informal classroom observation and principal/teacher conferences.
