Middle School Science Teacher

GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Middle School Principal, the Middle School Teacher is primarily responsible for the academic, social and psychological growth of students in a departmentalized middle school.

The teacher is expected to maintain a safe, caring, student-centered environment that promotes high academic and ethical standards and to perform other duties directly related to this position description. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Ensures the continual improvement of learning for every student. Implements the appropriate actions and strategies delineated for the school as part of the District's Mission Statement.

Diagnoses, assesses, instructs, guides and counsels students and maintains professional standards and skills to provide a positive classroom and school climate. Provides a classroom environment that fosters the opportunity to meet the individual needs of all students.

Attempts to successfully meet/accomplish subject matter objectives established by the department, school and District for each student and promotes standards of conduct and performance as established by the California State Board of Education.

Promotes the value of every student's right to be treated with dignity and respect. Demonstrated leadership and support of the educational and administrative philosophies of the school. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with fellow staff, parents and community members.

Uses technology effectively in classroom instruction, record keeping and school to home communication. Ability to use a computer to create documents, communicate with staff, and search the Internet. Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the District and/or self-selected as necessary.

Additional Related Duties/Responsibilities Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies; maintains required inventory records. Ensures a comfortable room environment through control of heating, lighting and ventilation to the extent possible. Administers group standardized tests in accordance with District testing program.

Participates in curriculum development programs within the school of assignment and/or on a District level. Shares in sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committees. Demonstrates a commitment to the professional development of self and colleagues through involvement in growth activities and opportunities.

Working Conditions Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations. Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time. Ability to see for purposes of reading laws and codes, rules and policies, and other printed matter and observing students.

Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels. Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation. Ability to bend and twist, stoop, kneel and run.

Ability to reach in all diretions. Moderate to high stress level. Occupational Certificates/Licenses Holds and Elementary or appropriate single subject California Teaching Credential or valid emergency certification issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Physical Conditions Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time; operate a computer and keyboard; near visual acuity to review written documentation; facility to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and on the telephone; manual dexterity to operate a telephone; physical agility to lift up to 10 pounds to shoulder height.
