JOB DESCRIPTION: Secondary Mathematics and Science Classroom Teacher

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid State of Alaska Teacher's Certificate/or ability to obtain, with Secondary Mathematics Endorsement

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Teaching experience

  • Degree in Secondary Education

  • Effective Classroom Management skills

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize technology in the classroom

  • Differentiate instruction

  • Experience with blended learning

  • NWEA MAP data

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at times designated.

  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.

  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.

  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.

  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.

  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes objectives for all lessons, units, and projects to communicate these objectives to students.

  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.

  • Strives to implement by instruction and action the District's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.

  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.

  • Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of District specialists as required, and provides for appropriate accommodations for Special Education and 504 students.

  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulation.

  • Assists administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.

  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.

  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department heads, evaluate their job performance.

  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.

  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.

  • Knowledge of middle school curriculum and concepts, including all subject matters taught.

  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.

  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.

  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.

  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

REPORTS TO:

  • Building Principal

SUPERVISES:

  • Students assigned to classes.

  • Provides general supervision before school, during passing periods and after school.

JOB GOAL:

  • Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district-approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Certified position - 190 day contract, start and end dates determined by Valdez City School District.

  • Salary and benefits determined via the negotiated agreement between the Valdez City School District and the Valdez American Federation of Teachers.

EVALUATION:

  • Evaluation is conducted in accordance with State of Alaska Educational Law and the Valdez City School District Negotiated Agreement using the approved Valdez City School District evaluation instrument. The evaluation is conducted by the Building Administrator.
