Job Description
Middle School English Faculty
Full-Time, Exempt, Category 1
Salary Range $60,000-$90,000
Reports to: Principal, Grades 4-8

General
Each teacher at Oaks Christian School will incorporate into their teaching a worldview that is distinctly Christian and will also demonstrate excellent teaching, learning, thinking, and expression. It is also expected that a teacher has scholarly abilities in the area in which they teach, and that each teacher will diligently work toward helping students become independent and confident learners. Each classroom teacher is directly accountable to the chair of his/her department, the Principal, and ultimately the Head of School.
Primary Duties
Spiritual Commitment and Growth
Has a dynamic, growing faith and is a spiritual role model for students
Maintains a commitment to the school's statement of faith in action and belief
Helps maintain an atmosphere of grace at OCS
Classroom Management
Maintains a disciplined learning environment within the classroom, which is built out of respect, grace, and passion for their subject
Is available to students and parents before and after school
Course Management
Maintains a challenging academic environment
Maintains an organization plan for each assigned course (subject matter outline, daily lesson plans, etc.)
Adheres to course outline as indicated in the curriculum and enriches curriculum when possible
Adept at using relevant and cutting-edge technology to develop relevant, real world learning experiences
Specifically, teacher candidates should have an understanding of the SAMR model and show relevant ways they have utilized technology to take the learning experience beyond the resources of the classroom
Personally pursues professional growth with instructional best practices
Commits to expertise and growth in discipline content and methodology
Maintains professional reading (books and journals)
Responsible to update AXIS (Blackbaud Learning Management System) - grades within one cycle of assignment, homework posted real time, and tests posted with at least a week advanced notice
Posts all assessments on the exam calendar at least two weeks in advance
Responsible to prepare grade reports, progress reports, and attendance reports in accordance with school policy
Professional Responsibilities and Duties
Executes all duties in a timely manner (holds class on time, meets deadlines, attends meetings on time, etc.)
Helps maintain a collegial, educational environment throughout the campus
Maintains a 'team player' attitude and willingly collaborates with colleagues and departmental teams
Maintains diligent communication with parents within 24 hours
Maintains cordial, professional relationships with all students, staff, parents, and community members
Attends meetings and sits on committees as assigned by the administration
Is willingly involved in the OCS community outside of school hours
Contributes to mandatory attendance events related to admissions and extracurricular events
Maintains a strong, relational spirit with advisory groups during chapel
Attends class overnight trips
Faithfully completes reasonable extra duty assignments (supervision, mentoring, office hours, Academic Help, etc.)
Abides by the spirit and policies in the OCS Faculty Handbook and OCS Grades 4-8 Faculty Guidelines
Instructional Best Practice
Candidates should be well versed in teaching best practices. Oaks Christian elementary and grades 6-8 classes are Project Based Learning focused. Future teachers should have experiences and portfolio examples of past instruction that incorporate the 7 Gold Standards of PBL teaching. Curricular units at Oaks culminate in real-world learning opportunities. Most importantly, OCS grades 4-8 strives to maintain the classical disciplines of knowledge within real-life application.
Advisory
Each full time faculty member (80% or higher FTE) is designated a student advisory group for the purpose of small group discussion as related to chapels and the advisory curriculum outline. The role of the advisor is to shepherd his/her students spiritually, socially, and academically. Advisory groups meet at various times per cycle. All candidates should see themselves as first and foremost a mentor of middle school students, secondarily to their specific discipline.
What is expected of an advisor?
Regular scheduled meeting time with their advisory groups as outlined by the administration
Sit with their students at school meetings such as chapels and assemblies
Participate as an advisory in school service projects
Earn the trust of their students
Pray for and with their students
Communicate with parents as needed
The culture at OCS is one where we are dedicated to developing the whole child. Advisory is an intentional way to have at least one adult advocate for each individual student.
Those with 80% - 100% teaching load are awarded benefits and are expected to fully comply with the above job description. Additional duties may be assigned to this position as required.
Education/Experience Required/Preferred: A four-year education degree is required. Master's Degree in Education is preferred. Teaching credential is preferred.
