The Woodlawn Campus of the University of Chicago Charter School (UCW) opened in September 2006. It has a three-part mission: 1) to assist students in developing the habits of mind, work, and heart to be successful in college and good citizens of their community; 2) to contribute to the community through student research, service, and leadership; and 3) to improve teaching and learning by serving as a site of professional development for teachers and school leaders. Woodlawn Middle School educates students in grades 6 - 8.

Purpose:

The AVID elective teacher is a skilled educator grounded in relationships. AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an academic acceleration program that aims to prepare students in the academic middle for four-year colleges. The AVID elective curriculum features writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading, note taking, and study skills. Because AVID elective students also enroll in at least one rigorous course including honors or AP, the AVID elective teacher is responsible for supporting students' academic success across content areas.

Position Summary:

Full-time, salaried AVID teaching position responsible for preparing students, regardless of tested ability, for success in college. Responsibilities include analyzing and using formative assessment data to improve instruction, designing curriculum and assessments using the learning standards of the University of Chicago Charter School, participating in and leading professional development activities and enabling students to contribute to the community through the creation of new knowledge.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate curriculum that develops the following academic skills: note-taking, time management, goal setting, communication, and teamwork.

  • Develop key study skills and implement them during small group tutoring sessions twice a week.

  • Develop habits of discussion and facilitate weekly whole-group and small group discussions based on relevant topics and texts.

  • Engage students in and monitor goal setting and future planning..

  • Engage students in and monitor organizational skills.

  • Organize two field trips that align to students' goals/future planning.

  • Serve as a student liaison.

  • Collect and monitor data on student progress.

  • Use student data to inform instruction.

  • Actively participate in bi-weekly grade level and weekly content PLCs.

  • Actively participate in instructional coaching.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders (AVID students, AVID parents, AVID counselors, the AVID coordinator, the AVID administrator, and teachers) to develop an AVID program based in a college-going culture.

  • Establish and maintain high expectations for AVID students' achievement.

  • Collect and analyze AVID student data and regularly monitor AVID students' academic progress.

  • Advocate for AVID students' access to and success in rigorous courses.

  • Teach and promote the use of AVID WICOR instructional strategies across content areas.

  • Collaborate with staff to effectively implement a tutorial process.

  • Other duties as required.

Education & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited college or university

  • Preferred Master's degree from accredited college or university

  • Professional Educator's License (PEL) required

  • Minimum of 1-3 years classroom teaching experience
