PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Plan, coordinate, and supervise all components of athletic training program for student athletes. Work under the advice and consent of team physician to carry out activities in the following areas:
prevention, evaluation, emergency treatment, physical reconditioning, rehabilitation of injuries, and other physician referrals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
TEA certification requirements
Bachelor's degree in athletic training or related field
Valid license from Texas Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers
Texas license (or be eligible for temporary license) NATABOC certified preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to provide injury prevention and rehabilitation services
Ability to provide emergency care
Knowledge of therapeutic modalities and ability to treat student athletes
Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes and assistants
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Three years previous experience as an athletic trainer required
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Illness/Injury Prevention
Plan and implement a comprehensive athletic injury and illness prevention program for student athletes.
Attend practice sessions and athletic contests as assigned by athletic coordinator or athletic director.
Establish and maintain effective communication with students, parents, medical and paramedical personnel, coaches, and other staff.
Provide physical conditioning training to student athletes.
Fit injured athletes with specialized equipment and oversee its use.
Prepare athletes for games and practices by conducting evaluations and using tape, wraps, splints, braces, and other protective devices as needed.
Identify acute injuries and provide first-aid triage.
Detect and resolve environmental risks to athletes.
Middle School Trainer
Provide coverage for two or more Middle programs.
Provide coverage for home athletic events for middle schools.
Provide coverage as needed based at the Feeder High Schools as assigned by the Athletic Director/Coordinator/Supervisor/Trainer.
Responsible for athletic evaluation and rehabilitation of injured athletes.
Record daily injury reports.
Keep track of daily sign-in sheets.
Use Rank One to log injury/treatment information and communicate with coaches.
Responsible for organizing, filing, assisting with pre-participation physical packets.
Communicate with parents, coaches and administrators regarding athletic injuries.
Complete and follow-up with Middle school athletic insurance claim forms.
Responsible for home and away events schedules for coaches and administrators through weekly correspondence via Rank One.
Provide treatments early morning, athletic periods, and after school as needed.
Supervise student athletic trainers.
Assist teaching yearly CPR, First Aid and AED training for coaches.
Maintain medical supplies and equipment needed for treatment of athletes.
Rehabilitation/Reconditioning
Plan and put in place a comprehensive rehabilitation and reconditioning program for injuries and illnesses sustained by student athletes.
Determine therapeutic goals and objectives for individual athletes.
Apply therapeutic modalities and instruct athletes on proper use of exercise equipment.
Evaluate and record rehabilitation progress of athletes. Develop criteria for progression and return to competition.
Follow professional, ethical, and legal parameters regarding use of drugs and therapeutic agents for treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes.
Administration
Coordinate scheduling of athletic physical examinations for the feeder schools and the high school after consulting with team physician.
Select, train, and supervise student assistants.
Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents including medical, accident, and treatment records as required.
Maintain an inventory of training supplies and equipment. Requisition additional supplies as needed.
Compile a list of male and female athletics who receive a physical from the feeder school and high school.
Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or to others.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
