JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Middle School Athletics/Activities Director

REPORTS TO: District Athletic Director and Building Principal

UNIT CLASSIFICATION: Classified Stipend

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

This position is responsible for initiation and management of a comprehensive athletic/activities program Grades 6-8 that achieves the goals and objectives of the athletic program and the district. All details essential to the success of meeting the mission statement and goals of athletics as defined required the efforts of individuals committed to the ideals of sportsmanship. respect, accountability, and honesty.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:

  • Plans, organize, control schoolwide athletic activities, develop standards and procedures for school wide athletic programs; coordinate district facilities, supervision and security at athletic events.

  • Serves as liaison between administrators, personnel, parents, students, and outside agencies; respond to inquiries and provide information concerning school wide athletics; coordinate activities and programs resolve issues and conflicts and exchange information.

  • Serves as a liaison and sustains positive relations with community based youth sports organizations.

  • Supervises the performance of assigned personnel; interview and select employees and recommend transfers, reassignment, termination and disciplinary actions; coordinate recruitment, job postings and descriptions, advertising and related paperwork with the Human Resources Department.

  • Adheres to all rules and regulations of Washington Interscholastic Activities Association including overseeing compliance with established rules and regulations; process related applications.

  • Provides technical expertise, information and assistance regarding athletic activities; assists in the formulation and development of policies, procedures and programs to assure an economical, safe and efficient work environment; advise the district athletic director and principal of unusual trends or problems and recommend appropriate action.

  • Plans, organizes and implements long and short-term programs and activities designed to enhance assigned athletic programs and services.

  • Directs coaching staff in maintaining accurate inventories of all athletic equipment and supplies while maintaining a program of maintenance for such equipment.

  • Develop and prepare the annual preliminary budget for the athletic department; analyze and review budgetary and financial data; control and authorize expenditures in accordance with established limitations; coordinate the purchase and maintenance of athletic equipment; prepare related bids; assure program funding and evaluate funding resources.

  • Supervises and enforces the Athletic Code.

  • Provides head coaches with student eligibility academic information.

  • Initiate, nurture, and manage a competitive sports program and encourages participation from all students in the school.

  • Provides sufficient supervision for spectator control.

  • Insure that all facilities and equipment are safe for the use of all concerned.

  • Work with local booster organizations and administration in promoting athletics and activities in Sunnyside.

  • Maintains a positive relationship with the media.

  • Conducts regular and staff coaches meetings that will inform and review the goals, objectives and mission statement of the athletic programs of the district.

  • Provides and coordinates officials' assignments and compensation.

  • Coordinate with the Transportation Department for traveling arrangements for all away games and activities.

  • Establish contact with opponent's athletic director in advance of each contest to offer assistance with arrangements and equipments.

  • Implements a continuous process to educate the community about the middle school

athletic programs.

  • Supervise and evaluate all coaches on an annual basis.

  • Interview, check references and make recommendations for renewing and hiring of new

coaches.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Directly supervise all athletic staff at the middle school in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, recommendation for hiring, training employees; planning, assignment, and directing work; and appraising performance.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to the District Athletic Director and middle school principal. Interacts regularly with students, parents community members, administrators, support staff and other district employees.

  • Regularly exert 10 to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

  • This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but will involve walking or standing for

extended periods of time.

  • Perceives the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral

information, manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work

with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

  • Three years teaching experience in related field preferred

  • Three years coaching experience preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

Planning, organization and direction of a middle school athletics program.

Budget preparation and control.

Purchasing and bid preparation policies, practices and terminology.

Oral and written communication skills.

Principles and practices of administration, supervision and training.

Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Ability to:

Plan, organize, control and direct middle school athletic activities.

Supervise the performance of assigned personnel.

Serve as liaison between administrators, personnel, parents, students and outside agencies.

Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Meet schedules and timelines.

Licenses/Special Requirements

Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate preferred.

Valid Washington State Drivers license or photo identification.

Social Security Card.

WSP/FBI fingerprint/background clearance.

Administrative endorsement preferred.

First Aid and CPR.

Safe School training.
