WHO YOU ARE

Explore Schools seeks an experienced educational leader who demonstrates a drive toward excellence and is passionate about serving all students. The ideal candidate is an outstanding leader and manager of adults, who believes and invests in developing talent, while possessing a strong understanding of academic rigor and effective instruction. Successful Academic Directors creatively and stubbornly implement the right solutions to ensure that all of our students have the tools they need to attend a college preparatory high school and beyond.

  • Committed to working in under-served communities

  • Experience coaching teachers or managing adults, required

  • Outstanding content knowledge throughout grades 6-8

  • Data-oriented: you use data to set goals and measure success

  • An eye for detail: you sweat the little things and provide differentiated approaches to instructional coaching

  • Exceptional verbal and communication skills: can pivot communication styles depending on desired outcomes and audience

  • 4+ years of teaching experience, preferably in an urban charter school

  • Master's Degree in Education, preferred

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Academic Directors are directly responsible for the coaching, growth, and evaluation of the teachers they supervise. Working closely and reporting to the school Principal, you will be expected to manage the following daily:

  • Collaborate with the leadership team to identify academic priorities, set measurable goals to achieve priorities and monitor progress towards goals

  • Make decisions that are strategic, intentional, and grounded in data

  • Thoughtfully engage and invest families and community stakeholders in Explore's work

  • Ensure that teacher's professional development goals are being met through direct, targeted coaching

  • Partner with the instructional leadership team to continually assess professional development needs and execute on a differentiated approach to meet those needs

  • Collaborate with the instructional leadership to continually assess the development of instructional team members and execute on a differentiated approach to meet their needs

  • Oversee the systems, practices, and cycles of assessment and the constant use of date to drive student performance

  • Implement school-wide procedures and policies to ensure student safety

  • Work closely with the Explore Schools network office to recruit and select new staff members

LOCATION

Explore is a network of 8 charter schools located in the Canarsie, Crown Heights, and Flatbush communities of Brooklyn, NY. Our network office is located in DUMBO, Brooklyn. This role is based in one of our 8 schools, and requires some travel to our network office.

You are ready to lead a classroom and excited to work closely with students in a 20:1 student-to-teacher ratio. You prioritize student engagement, critical thinking, and relationship building in the classroom. You have demonstrated that you are a reflective practitioner, willing to go above and beyond to meet the needs of your students, and educating the whole child. * Committed to working in underserved communities * Relentless grit: exceptional level of patience and focus to overcome challenges, and achieve results * Strong classroom management skills: you can set high expectations in the classroom and keep scholars engaged * Writing content knowledge * Exceptional communication skills: you shine in front of the classroom and through written and verbal communication * Detail-oriented, and highly organized * Classroom teaching experience required; 2 years preferred * New York State Teaching Certification, preferred * Master's Degree in Education, preferred WHAT YOU'LL DO As a Middle School Writing Teacher you will lead classrooms of 20 middle school students. You will be expected to manage the following daily: * Provide a range of instructional, management, and assessment strategies to meet the different needs of students * Create thoughtful and engaging unit and lesson plans daily * Participate in creating, revising, administering, and grading assessments * Keep accurate and organized records of student information * Provide tutoring to small student groups as required * Collaborate with colleagues across content areas and grade levels * Attend and actively participate in all meetings including PLCs, grade level meetings, and PD sessions * Conduct parent-teacher conferences as needed, as well as on-going parent communication * Ensure the safety of students at all times * Assist with non-instructional supervision of students, such as arrival/dismissal, hallway monitoring, substitute teaching, lunch and playground duty, or supervision of extracurricular activities BENEFITS AND PERKS Explore staff enjoy a competitive salary and benefits, generous vacation-including network shutdown days, considerable matching of retirement contribution, and more.
