Introduction

Infrastructure has an opening for an experienced Microprocessor/System Hardware Engineer. As a Hardware at , you'll get to work on the systems that are driving the Artificial Intelligence era and the Quantum revolution. More specifically, you will join an elite team of engineering professionals who enable customers to make better decisions quicker on the most trusted hardware platform in today's market. You will join a team integral in developing industry-leading hardware for 's zSeries, , Storage, and Quantum systems.

Your Role and Responsibilities

Qualified candidates will have excellent interpersonal, teaming, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. While this role is primarily focused on analog circuit design, candidates with domain expertise in all facets of Processor, ASIC, FPGA and System Integration development may be considered.

Key domain expertise may include VLSI Logic Design and Verification; Signal and Power Integrity; 1st level Chip Packaging; VLSI Analog, Array, and Radio Frequency Design; Printed Circuit Board Design; VLSI Physical Design; Firmware Development; and Laboratory Hardware Validation and Characterization.

Additional preferred skills include project management and familiarity with semiconductor technologies and processes as well as knowledge of electronic design automation software and methodologies.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Circuit Design: Design analog and mixed-signal circuits including amplifiers, filters, oscillators, voltage regulators, and data converters. Utilize CAD tools such as SPICE, Cadence Virtuoso, and MATLAB for circuit design and simulation.

  • Simulation and Verification: Perform circuit simulations to ensure functionality, performance, and reliability. Verify circuit designs through theoretical analysis, simulation, and prototype testing.

  • Component Selection: Select appropriate components such as transistors, capacitors, resistors, and integrated circuits based on performance, cost, and availability requirements.

  • Layout and PCB Design: Collaborate with layout engineers to create physical layouts of analog circuits considering factors such as parasitics, noise, and signal integrity. Review and optimize PCB layouts to meet design specifications.

  • Prototype Testing: Build and test prototypes of analog circuits to validate design performance and functionality. Analyze test results and make necessary design improvements.

  • Documentation: Prepare comprehensive design documentation including specifications, schematics, simulation results, and test reports. Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry standards and regulations.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams including digital design engineers, firmware engineers, and system architects to integrate analog circuits into overall system designs. Collaborate with manufacturing and test engineers to ensure successful production of designed circuits.

  • Continuous Learning: Stay updated on the latest advancements in analog circuit design techniques, tools, and technologies. Apply new knowledge to improve design methodologies and drive innovation.

About the Team

This organization is comprised of departments focused on all facets of chip design and taking a system from concept to general availability. These highly technical teams have a demonstrated strong record for excellence in delivery and innovation. In addition to local collaboration, these teams interact closely with IBM's multi-site / cross-geo similarly skilled Infrastructure and Research teams to enable the roadmaps for all IBM's Brands to be successful.

The technical team you will be a part of is a highly collaborative team with an environment where collective brainstorming, open communication, and seeing things from the greater organization perspective is valued.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 2-5 years of industry work experience in a Microprocessor, ASIC, FPGA, Firmware, or hardware development environment (e.g. x86, ARM or RISC-V processor design)

  • Strong understanding of analog and mixed-signal circuit theory, including semiconductor device physics and circuit analysis

  • Proficiency in CAD tools such as SPICE, Cadence Virtuoso, and MATLAB for circuit simulation and design

  • Experience with PCB layout tools such as Altium Designer or Cadence Allegro

  • Familiarity with analog IC design principles and methodologies is a plus

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Comprehensive understanding of Microprocessor, ASIC, FPGA, Firmware, and hardware development engineering processes

  • Experience with one or more programming skills such as Python, Skill, Perl, TCL

  • Experience with latest Semiconductor Chip industry technology
