Under the general administrative supervision of the Director Diagnostic Imaging the clinical supervision of the medical directors of Diagnostic Imaging coordinates directs and supervises patient care within the department of Diagnostic Imaging. Oversees the clinical operations of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (VIR) and Pre and Post Procedure (PPP) and the Department overall.

Functions as a resource person providing guidance and instruction while administering policies and procedures. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patient.


Plans directs and coordinates the care of patients throughout the Department of Diagnostic Imaging.

Identifies and allocates environmental technical and personnel resources needed to meet the immediate needs of patients being managed in the department. Provides support to patients family members as needed.

Evaluates the scope and effectiveness of patient care delivery and participates in quality assessment and improvement programs.

Establishes and maintains quality assurance standards for patient safety environmental and infection control for the department by interpreting RIH overall patient care policies procedures and objectives.

Compiles and interprets statistical data on section operations as needed.

Develops policies procedures standards of care and critical paths to promote positive patient outcomes.

Oversees compliance with regulatory and accrediting outside agency standards (i.e. Joint Commission OSHA health department utilization review 3rd party payers).

Prepares and approves staffing assignments to support the Departments clinical areas. Recruits hires develops and retains a staff of qualified and competent nurses.

Makes on-going assessments regarding competencies of nursing staff. Conducts personnel counseling sessions and works with the Department Director when terminating staff.

Performs and documents nursing staff performance evaluations makes and communicates staff performance improvement action plans as needed works with nurses to help assure individual growth.

Identifies staff educational needs and use interdisciplinary collaboration to foster staff development.

Oversees compliance to RIH mandatory education credentialing and nursing and department standards and assessment of current department nursing services against Community Standard of Care.

Assists department director in preparation of yearly budget manages monthly operating and makes recommendations for capital expenses that are needed to support direct patient care services.

Monitors staff compliance to schedule by reviewing weekly payroll.

Provides overall department patient care consultation and ensures adherence to all RIH established patient care standards.

Participates in professional organizations.

Serves on various hospital committees as assigned.

Understands and practices ALARA principles of Radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters.

RN Licensure in State of RI. PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) Certified.

ICU (Intensive Care Unit) Certified.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing required.

Responsible to maintain a current knowledge of professional nursing practice within the framework of the Nurse Practice Act.

Demonstrate analytical and critical thinking skills to plan and direct nursing and Section operations.

Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interface effectively with patients and their families physicians staff and other hospital employees.

Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of the aging process human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.


Minimum two years of Vascular and Interventional Radiology experience and able to demonstrate the scope and depth of knowledge needed to direct patient care services in a complex high intensity medical environment.

Minimum one year of critical care experience.

Five years supervisory experience preferred.

Must possess the personal maturity needed to manage nursing staff effectively and appropriately.

Must be able to demonstrate the potential to accurately assess and direct patient care operations within the Department of Diagnostic Imaging.


Supervisory responsibility for up to 25 FTEs.

Prolonged standing and walking.

Exposed to all patient elements.

May be required to lift/turn patients and equipment.

Repeated bending squatting stooping.

VIEW JOBS 11/3/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-02-01T00:00 Summary: The Manager of Medical Engineering reports to the Director of Medical Engineering. manages the day to day operations of Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMET III's and BMET II's) in the testing maintenance and repair of a wide variety of patient care equipment including complex state-of-art biomedical equipment. Oversees the medical equipment maintenance program at the Rhode Island Hospitals and affiliated outside clinics and patient centers. Participates in development of department policies and procedures. Responsibilities: Participates in the development of departmental policies and procedures and assumes primary responsibility for the development and approval of all procedures within the Medical Engineering functions. Ensures compliance with all policies and procedures by subordinates and that other hospital staff are made aware of such policies as appropriate. Assists in budget preparation and capital equipment planning and acquisition process. Maintains open communications and effective relationships with equipment vendor to ensure appropriate maintenance of equipment to report and resolve related issues. Develops and maintains effective relationships with staff and managers in other hospital departments to ensure successful budgeting evaluation acquisition installation testing maintenance and repair of equipment. Prepares distributes and maintains reports on user errors and equipment problems to comply with standards established by department/hospital quality assurance The Joint Commission (TJC) the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other related safety regulations and standards. Ensures accurate records are developed and maintained related to clinical equipment inventory service repair and parts inventory. Coordinates the preventive maintenance for equipment under assigned area. Maintains and performs preventive maintenance to ensure the equipment users have complete effective and efficient service. Ensures electrical safety programs are in compliance with TJC the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards. Manages the scheduling and updating of all safety inspections performance verifications and preventive maintenance. May perform duties of subordinate staff when required due to absence of any technician at a given time. Responds to emergency repair calls for patient-connected life support systems requiring expeditious analysis and resolution of problem. Interfaces complex medical equipment and instrumentation to be used for the diagnosis and treatment of patients or in research studies. Reviews pertinent literature and attends seminars to maintain awareness of medical instrumentation innovations related maintenance techniques and awareness of the new required standards and regulations. Provides technical and functional guidance to BMET's by instructing and demonstrating repair and maintenance procedures on new and/or complex state-of-the art medical equipment and instrumentation. Evaluates staff's abilities to effectively work on equipment and that adherence to established procedures. Provide conflict resolution to the BMET off-shift on-call program; provide technical as well as logistic resolution to any issue that as necessary. Schedule BMET staff in support of the Clinical Engineering projects on equipment inventory inspection and installation. Make day-to-day decisions on maintenance schedules service call triaging between in-house and outside vendors. Assist the Director in all aspect of department operations. Prepares and initiates purchase orders within level of authority for outside services to perform repairs and/or purchase required parts; confirms completion of service in accordance with specifications and authorizes payment for same. Coordinates and tracks service activities of the work group and outside vendors. Assists in tracking outside vendor invoices and expenses investigating and resolving discrepancies. Participates as a member of various equipment safety user and purchasing committees. Assists in selection process for new equipment by recommending specifications necessary to meet safety standards and regulations. Participates in development and recommendation of training procedures for the nursing staff and physicians on the proper use of the biomedical equipment and the proper clinical applications. Assists in special projects such as medical device pre-purchase evaluation testing conversion and installation. Other information: QUALIFICATIONS-EDUCATION: Level of knowledge generally obtained through completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Business or the equivalent experience. Knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office applications maintenance management software package and basic database concept with ability to create and present data analysis reports in a spreadsheet or word format. QUALIFICATIONS-EXPERIENCE: Three to Five years of demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills with effective interpersonal oral and written communication skills. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Works primarily in an office setting. Occasionally may be exposed to patient care environment. Minimum exposure to hazardous waste. Any potential hazard is minimized by adherence to safety procedures and the use of protective clothing and equipment. Manual dexterity needed for inspecting and repairing equipment and devices which require the use of small hand tools and testing equipment.
