Manages, coordinates and evaluates all elements of financial, material, and human resources in the provision of Anesthesia Technical Support Services in Surgical Services. Collaboratively with Director, activates divisional strategic planning initiatives supporting WVU Medicine's mission, values, and goals.

Actively leads PI, quality, and patient safety initiatives in assigned department. Establishes policies and procedures that govern Anesthesia Technical Support Services and serves as an expert resource in matters regarding standardized departmental work practices and patient throughput. Oversees personnel scheduling and training/ongoing educational development of the Anesthesia support staff. Monitors work practices to ensure compliance with regulatory practice standards, research, and evidence-based practice.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.Associate Degree OR High School Diploma AND seven years' experience as Anesthesia Technician or Technologist

2.Active ASATT Certification as Cer.A.T (Certified Anesthesia Technician) OR Cer.A.T.T. (Certified Anesthesia Technologist).

3.Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.

EXPERIENCE:

1.Five (5) years of experience as a Certified Anesthesia Technician or Certified Anesthesia Technologist with 3 years of experience as a supervisor, lead, or coordinator of Anesthesia Support Services

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.

1.Manages, coordinates and evaluates all elements of financial, material, and human resources in the provision of Anesthesia technical support services throughout Surgical Services. Oversees maintenance of adequate inventory of anesthesia supplies, off-site carts, equipment, and difficult airway scopes used by anesthesia throughout Surgical Services. Includes management of daily Anesthesia technical support services in all locations.

2.Collaboratively with Director, activates divisional strategic planning initiatives supporting WVU Medicine's mission, values, and goals. Establishes policies and procedures that govern campus Anesthesia Technical Support Services.

3.Manages personnel to ensure the availability of an appropriately credentialed, clinically competent, well-developed cohesive work force to meet patient care needs. Oversees personnel scheduling.

Establishes departmental staffing matrixes. Activates overtime to cover patient care needs and operational functions. Initiates and maintains appropriate personnel records for responsible areas. Monitors staffing productivity.

4.Oversees the development and implementation of on-going educational programs for professional and support staff which include new employee orientation, needs assessments, annual competencies, in-service continuing education, and new equipment and/or systems training which enables the staff to perform on the basis of current policy/procedures and state-of-the-art practices.

5.Leads QI/PI teams for system or hospital to ensure harmonization of policies and procedures. Works in conjunction with the leadership staff and staff/physicians, in identifying areas of opportunity for improved efficiency, cost reduction (through standardization and physician profiling) and improvement in quality care delivery utilizing the Performance Improvement process.

Designs and executes Quality monitoring incorporating regulatory standards, policies/procedures, and national organizational standards. Ensures practice compliance and standardization in the multiple sites of Anesthesia Technical Support Services.

6.Coordinates anesthesia clinical product trials including the solicitation of end-user feedback. Monitors, maintains, and coordinates capital equipment purchase plan for Surgical Services.

Analyzes contractual agreements and makes recommendations to the Director. Plans for long term equipment replacements/upgrades.

7.Maintains effective communication with Medical Staff, employees, customers, and other departments to assure identification of problems and provide problem resolution in a timely manner.Daily performs expert problem resolution and troubleshooting using crucial conversation skills and service recovery communications.

8.Leads the budgeting process for the anesthesia support cost center(s) and performs monthly budgetary variance reporting. Shares operational budget variance analysis /reporting with the Director and activates fiscal action planning as needed to keep budget accounts at or under budget. Leads and reports cost saving initiatives.

9.Implements standardized work processes that maximize patient/employee safety and work flow efficiencies. Works with the OR Leadership Team to disseminate time-sensitive information to staff, physicians, and others by written and/or verbal means.

Submits departmental metrics for divisional reporting. Performs and documents follow up to incident reports and participates in root cause analysis processes.



  1. Responsible for departmental interviewing, hiring, recruitment, and retention of assigned staff. Coordinates job shadow experiences for Anesthesia Technical Support Services' applicants or students. Participates in new physician on-boarding.

  2. Provides ongoing feedback to employees concerning job performance through goal development, peer evaluation, and performance evaluations. Coaches and counsels employees under the direction of the Director.

    Develops and activates employee action plans. Performs stay interviews and frequent touch bases with new employees.

  3. Stays informed of ASATT/CRNA professional scope of practice and standards. Researches new technology/procedures in the arena of Anesthesia Technical Support Services that will benefit all campus locations. Maintains professional growth through continuing education.

  4. Serves on hospital committees as assigned. To be impactful participant, improves and maintains supervisory skills by participating in self-development activities such as seminars, workshops, classes, literature review, and professional networking. Participates in Leadership Forum development.

  5. Serves as a managerial contact for anesthesia support construction and renovation projects.

  6. Functions as a staff role model as needed by promoting cooperative problem solving. Provides staff coaching in a manner to promote organizational trust.

    Conducts select progressive discipline and investigative interviews. Develops and monitors employee action plans working directly with assigned departmental business partner.

  7. Assesses satisfaction issues and takes appropriate action to resolve through daily rounds. Leads employee satisfaction action planning for department and provides progression reports to staff. Ensures the establishment and implementation of a unit culture that is responsive to patients, providers, departments, and staff as well as showcasing WVU Medicine's Behavioral Standards.

  8. Through daily shift rounds, assesses Anesthesia Technical Support Services' staff and customer needs/issues. Takes actions to resolve. Performs managerial follow-up of incident reports and keeps director informed of patient care events.

  9. Performs Anesthesia Technical Support Services when needed. May serve as mentor/preceptor for in-coming staff.

  10. Performs other duties as assigned. May act in absence of director. Covers managerial call.

  11. Assists with accomplishment of hospital, divisional, and departmental goals. Schedules regular touch base meetings with Lead CRNA(s) and other Manager(s) to review Anesthesia Technical Support Services/opportunities.

SKILLS & ABILILTIES:

1.Ability to follow directions, both written and verbal, and work with people.

2.Has a thorough understanding of cardiac monitor procedures, hemodynamic techniques, and equipment.

3.Demonstrates advanced knowledge of anesthesia procedures that are performed by the licensed anesthesia providers, aseptic techniques, anatomy, anesthesia equipment, professional standards, and regulatory practices.

4.Ability to independently plan, organize, and set priorities in routine and/or emergency situations. Demonstrates ability to lead team in these situations.

5.Knowledge of Microsoft Office functionalities.



Leadership skills needed to lead small work groups and present concepts to a diverse audience of both consumers and providers of services demonstrating excellent analytical, communication, and problem solving skills.
