Description of Work
This position works as a member of the Natural Hazards Branch of NC Emergency Management (NCEM) and serves as a technical advisor on meteorology. This position is responsible for providing daily analysis of meteorological data to evaluate hazardous weather threats to the state while assisting in the management of the North Carolina hurricane and earthquake programs.
Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Maintaining situational awareness of potential, imminent, or occurring hazardous weather- related threats and developing written and oral briefings to advise the State Emergency Response Team of potential impacts and timing.
Acting as a liaison between the National Weather Service (NWS), National Hurricane Center (NHC), FEMA's Hurricane Liaison Team (HLT), and state & local emergency managers across North Carolina.
Developing and revising natural hazard and other assigned emergency response plans.
Serving on numerous state and federal committees related to various natural hazards that threaten North Carolina as well as representing NCEM at meetings throughout the state.
Performing other duties, as required.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The typical work schedule is Monday
5pm. During activations of the State Emergency Operations Center, this position will be assigned duties in the Planning Section in support of the State Emergency Response Team.

The salary grade for this position is GN11. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

The mission of NC Emergency Management is to enhance North Carolina's resiliency through active collaboration, communication, and coordination of efficient and effective preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation of all natural and man-made hazards and threats.
About the Section:
The primary mission of the Planning Section is to provide NCEM and the State Emergency Response Team with planning support, situational awareness, interagency coordination, meteorological support, and effective radiological emergency preparedness programs. Furthermore, the Planning Section implements and manages the statewide training and exercise programs.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:
Knowledge of meteorological principles including knowledge of daily and emergency operations relating to meteorology.
Experience in developing, maintaining, or editing emergency response and/or recovery plans.
Experience with public speaking and presentations.
Experience interpreting and applying local, state, and/or federal laws, regulations, policies, procedures, or guidance.
BS or MS in Meteorology
Experience in technical writing and/or project management
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of progressively responsible emergency management planning, research, analysis, community services or emergency services experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
