Metallurgical Technician

Position Overview

The Novelis Novi Customer Solution Center team is seeking a Metallurgical Technician. The person in this role will report to the Trial and Development Team Lead who coordinates the lab functions at the site. The ideal candidate will be responsible for performing a range of metallurgical evaluations in a safe manner, while supporting lab needs and at times assisting with joining and forming evaluations. This position will complete evaluations in support of R&D projects and business critical support to Novels' automotive customers.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities:

• Conduct diverse metallurgical evaluations using equipment of the metallurgical lab including: shearing, machining, tensile testing, bending, metallography and microscopy.

• Complete testing, identify where additional data/analysis is needed and clearly communicate technical information and results.

• Maintain and diagnose critical equipment, including calibration and maintenance schedules while leveraging internal R&D and plant labs to establish laboratory standard processes.

• Use equipment in a safe operating manner and in compliance with Novelis safety standards

• Identify key lab safety points, complete risk assessments as needed, and correct hazards or unsafe practices in the lab area

• Become a subject matter authority in specific equipment, lab processes and safety systems to document, review and provided training to other users

Minimum Qualifications:

• HS diploma or equivalent

• 5-10 years of hands-on laboratory experience, preferably in an industrial setting

• Fundamental understanding of sheet material evaluations (tensile, bending, metallography)

• Consistent track record and willingness to develop and learn new skills

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work well with diverse workgroups and cultures

• Background with ISO17025 (or equivalent) practices

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with aluminum sheet metal evaluations and standards

• Experience operating mobile and industrial equipment

• CNC operation and G-code knowledge
