Here in North Charleston, SC, Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC is writing an exciting chapter in Daimler's history as we add the first U.S. van production plant for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, in addition to our existing assembly operation for Sprinter and METRIS vans. The Body in White (BIW) department is currently hiring Body Shop Operator 3 with a specialized skillset on Metal Finishing.


  • Set up and operate various manual and power punch presses, brakes, mallets, mandrels, and shears to perform a variety of sheet metal operations

  • References engineering drawings and sketches to prepare, sequence, and produce sheet metal parts and assemblies

Perform welding using different welding processes

  • Perform sheet metal fitting

  • Conduct sheet metal working tasks on body parts and areas

  • Execute tests and inspections to detect surface imperfections, align, adjust, level, and gap sheet metal panels

  • Perform complete body re-working

  • Carry out training measures

  • Participate in Continuous Improvement Plan

  • Assist in the organization of teamwork



  • High School Diploma or GED required

  • Required: 4 years relevant experience; OR Relevant certificate 3 years relevant experience; OR associates degree in Welding Technology or similar 1 year relevant experience

  • Preferred: 5 years relevant experience; OR Relevant certificate 4 years relevant experience; OR assoc. degree in Welding Technology or similar 2 years relevant experience

Knowledge and Skills

  • Must either currently possess or have the ability to acquire an AWS D1.1 GMAW 4G certification

  • Experience with sheet metal and automotive body repair and rework

  • Experience in a manufacturing setting

  • CMT (Cold Metal Transfer) and spot welding experience is a plus

Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC ("MBV") is a plant in Ladson, South Carolina that assembles Sprinter vans for the U.S. market under the brands Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner. The midsize Metris van was added to the assembly line in 2015.

Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC announced in March 2015 that it will invest $500 million in construction of a new Sprinter production plant, in addition to an expansion of existing operations. In July 2016, MBV officially broke ground on the site of its new plant, located next to existing operations in the North Charleston area. The MBV facility will provide up to 1,300 jobs by the end of the decade.

More than 112,000 Sprinters have been assembled in North Charleston and delivered to destinations in the U.S. since 2006. The U.S. is now the second largest market for Sprinter vans, after Germany.

Minimum Qualifications * Education: High School/ G.E.D * Years of Experience: 4-5 years of roofing experience * Certifications: OSHA-30 * Driver License: Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * Knowledge of Safety techniques and procedures and set up a Safety plan, including tool box talks, safety huddles, equipment inspections * Ability to work independently and supervise and lead the crew to meet quality and production goals. Calculate and control labor projections and material needs including inventories. Supervise subcontractors. * Ability to train the crew and subcontractors as needed * Attention to detail, ability to prioritize task and meet deadlines. Supervise for quality control. * Ability to organized, plan, and execute work assignments * Ability to read shop drawings and reproduce details. Knowledge of how to layout roofs and walls. * Ability to climb ladders, stairways and scaffolding * Knowledge of how to cut, shape, fit, join and install metal, insulation, ice & water shields, wood or other construction materials. Calculate stretch outs to maximize use of materials. * Interpersonal and leadership skills necessary to work with the team * Ability to conduct on site meetings with the crew and subcontractors. * Knowledge of how to install and pipe boots, ridge/hip caps, rake, eave lock and ice & water shield * Knowledge of how to install roof/wall panels, counter flashing, coping, fascia, gutters, miters, downspouts, roof curbs * Knowledge of how to seam and solder * Knowledge of how to take trim and panels measurements. Clips spacing plans. * General knowledge of construction materials and tools involved in the assembly, installation or repair of roofing structures. Metal metallurgy compatibility. * Ability to perform general physical activities in construction areas * Ability to identify problems and develop solutions in order to accomplish work * Ability to identify and resolves problems in a timely manner * Ability to use oral or written communication to convey information effectively. Meet with GC and customers. Ability to receive Manufacturer training. * Use of logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems * Observance of performance of yourself, coworkers or organization to make improvements or take corrective action * Ability to fulfill paper work requirements: time sheets, safety huddles, material and sheet metal shop requisitions, job reports, tool box talks, and safety huddles Essential Functions * Clean up debris from the roof surface and surrounding property. * Install, repair, or replace single-ply roofing systems, using waterproof sheet materials such as modified plastics, elastomeric, or other asphaltic compositions. * Cut metal, felt, shingles, and strips of flashing and fit them into angles formed by walls, vents, and intersecting roof surfaces. * Install vapor barriers and/or layers of insulation on the roof decks of roofs, and seal the seams. * Cover exposed nail heads with roofing cement or caulking to prevent water leakage and rust. * Cut roofing paper to size using knives, and nail or staple roofing paper to roofs in overlapping strips to form bases for other materials. * Install partially overlapping layers of material over roof insulation surfaces, determining distance of roofing material overlap using chalk lines, gauges on shingling hatchets, or lines * Covering roofs and exterior walls of structures with metal, slate, asphalt, aluminum, wood, gravel, gypsum, and/or related materials, using brushes, knives, punches, hammers and other tools. * Operating Vehicles, mechanized devices, or equipment * Repair cracks, defects, or damage, using proper materials * Physical ability to stand and walk, lift and carry items weighing 50 pounds regularly * Apply adhesives, caulking, sealants, or coatings * Inspect equipment, structures and material * Train and coach other employees * Evaluate information to determine compliance with standards * Adhere to company safety policies and procedures Baker Roofing Company is an equal opportunity employer and gives consideration for employment to qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or protected veteran status.
