Here in North Charleston, SC, Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC is writing an exciting chapter in Daimler's history as we add the first U.S. van production plant for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, in addition to our existing assembly operation for Sprinter and METRIS vans. The Body in White (BIW) department is currently hiring Body Shop Operator 3 with a specialized skillset on Metal Finishing.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate various manual and power punch presses, brakes, mallets, mandrels, and shears to perform a variety of sheet metal operations

  • References engineering drawings and sketches to prepare, sequence, and produce sheet metal parts and assemblies

Perform welding using different welding processes

  • Perform sheet metal fitting

  • Conduct sheet metal working tasks on body parts and areas

  • Execute tests and inspections to detect surface imperfections, align, adjust, level, and gap sheet metal panels

  • Perform complete body re-working

  • Carry out training measures

  • Participate in Continuous Improvement Plan

  • Assist in the organization of teamwork

Qualifications:

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required

  • Required: 4 years relevant experience; OR Relevant certificate 3 years relevant experience; OR associates degree in Welding Technology or similar 1 year relevant experience

  • Preferred: 5 years relevant experience; OR Relevant certificate 4 years relevant experience; OR assoc. degree in Welding Technology or similar 2 years relevant experience

Knowledge and Skills

  • Must either currently possess or have the ability to acquire an AWS D1.1 GMAW 4G certification

  • Experience with sheet metal and automotive body repair and rework

  • Experience in a manufacturing setting

  • CMT (Cold Metal Transfer) and spot welding experience is a plus

Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC ("MBV") is a plant in Ladson, South Carolina that assembles Sprinter vans for the U.S. market under the brands Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner. The midsize Metris van was added to the assembly line in 2015.

Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC announced in March 2015 that it will invest $500 million in construction of a new Sprinter production plant, in addition to an expansion of existing operations. In July 2016, MBV officially broke ground on the site of its new plant, located next to existing operations in the North Charleston area. The MBV facility will provide up to 1,300 jobs by the end of the decade.

More than 112,000 Sprinters have been assembled in North Charleston and delivered to destinations in the U.S. since 2006. The U.S. is now the second largest market for Sprinter vans, after Germany.

Job Overview The Line Keeper has the knowledge about all equipment and processes in their area to ensure the daily production requirements at MBV are met. You will be responsible for the output in amount and quality in that area. You will also make improvements and partner with engineering to maintain processes and equipment. Essential Job Functions may include: * Set up and feed machines, operate automated and robotic welding machines * Monitor and set up machinery for optimal performance Sanding, grinding and deburring of metals Work with hand, power, and pneumatic tools Perform quality and visual inspection of final welds Assemble and fabricate metal structure according to work specifications * Read and interpret diagrams and blueprints of the process * Efficiently and safely load machines with required parts and identify any issues that arise * Participate in the Continuous Improvement Program Job Responsibilities * Perform setup operations for special cases (establish tooling and process for non-standard manufacturing cases) * Perform plant and machinery upgrades for non-standard cases, test parts, new parts and prototypes without plans in some cases * If necessary, create complex upgrade plans for non-standard processes.
