  • The Mental Health Counselor is a member of the multidisciplinary patient treatment team. He/she implements clinical care responsibilities in accordance with unit/departmental policies, procedures and standards under the supervision of a registered nurse. The Mental Health Counselor must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients ranging in age from pre-school to adolescence on the Child Unit and ages 19 through senior adulthood on the adult unit. BLS certification and Bachelor's degree required.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive): The Mental Health Worker provides direct care services in the skills of daily living by instructing and/or assisting patients in feeding, bathing, toileting, dressing, cleaning and clothing maintenance, oral and physical hygiene, self-preservation, etc. including taking and reporting vital signs to ensure the daily needs, dignity and human rights of the patients are met. In order to better serve our patients and to promote safety, the Mental Health Worker will make attempts to establish a rapport with all patients; and will also practice the principles of Safety, Hope and Healing. This includes delivering trauma-informed care, utilizing de-escalation techniques and the patients’ Individual Crisis Plans. Additional duties include providing 15 minute checks and 1:1 or constant observation as ordered; responding efficiently and effectively to emergency situations. Successful candidates will be committed to treating all patients with dignity and respect through interactions which affirm the individual’s needs and preferences and by optimally integrating the patient’s perspective into all facets of care; and will advocate for patients, facilitate timely resolution of patient concerns and assist patients in the exercise of their rights. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills, ability to lift heavy objects or persons and be comfortable working with patients in physical or emotional distress. Preferred Qualifications: Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency. Hospital Mission: At the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, we take pride in helping people recover from illnesses and conditions that are often underserved or difficult to manage in other health care settings. The DMH units within the Hospital provide inpatient psychiatric services to adults with serious mental illness with the goal of enhancing autonomy, safety and return to the community. Patients are treated by a multidisciplinary team, led by attending psychiatrists which also includes psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, mental health workers, occupational therapists and rehabilitative staff specializing in vocational, recreational and expressive therapies. A variety of treatment modalities are used, including psychopharmacologic, psychotherapeutic (individual, group and family), psycho-educational, behavioral, cognitive and milieu therapies.
