Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

For Psychologists: A Ph.D./Psy.D. (or foreign equivalent) from an APA-accredited clinical or counseling psychology program and completion of pre-doctoral internship (and obtain NY State licensure within one year of start date). A minimum of two (2) years of full-time postdoctoral work experience providing clinical services (DSM-5 intakes, emergency assessments, individual and/or group psychotherapy), clinical supervision, and/or teaching psychology.

For Social Workers: A Master of Social Work degree (foreign equivalent or higher) with a specialization in clinical social work, clinical practice or mental health, possession of state licensure (LMSW) and one (1) year of postgraduate clinical mental health work experience.

For Licensed Mental Health Counselors: A Master of Mental Health Counseling degree or related discipline, and possession of a NY State license in mental health counseling (LMHC).

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous work experience in a university or college mental health setting. Experience in counseling students from diverse backgrounds.

Experience in any of the following areas of specialization; eating disorders, women's/men's issues, LGTBQ issues, group therapy, substance abuse, and learning disabilities. Experience providing group psychotherapy and risk assessment in an outpatient treatment setting. Training and experience conducting workshops and/or outreach programming on depression/suicide prevention.

Electronic medical record-keeping experience with programs such as Medicat, Point and Click, and/or Titanium. Experience supervising and/or teaching clinicians in training. Proficiency in spoken and/or written languages other than English.

Brief Description of Duties:

The Counselor provides counseling to students, assessment interviews, and referrals to services. Provides training and consultation for faculty and staff around issues related to the developmental and psychological needs of college students.

The successful incumbent will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem-solving. The incumbent should have the ability to handle spontaneous work demands while undertaking projects that require planning.

The incumbent plays a crucial role as a team member within Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services. In this capacity, they will collaborate with other team members to collectively contribute to the overall functioning and effectiveness of the services provided.

This involves actively participating in team meetings, sharing insights, and engaging in collaborative decision-making processes. The incumbent's role extends to fostering a cooperative and supportive atmosphere, ensuring seamless teamwork, and collectively working towards the common goals and objectives of Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services.

Duties:

  • Provide psychological services to students on both a regular and emergency basis, and when necessary, during non-traditional hours. Services include but are not limited to, individual treatment, couple treatment, group treatment, crisis intervention, triage, clinical consultation, and case management.

  • Maintain current, accurate clinical documentation to meet NY, federal (FERPA) and accreditation standards and CAPS policies in all areas. Serves all campuses including West, East (HSC), and Southampton campus locations and satellite offices.2303650

  • Train staff, faculty, and students on relevant campus issues such as depression/suicide prevention, alcohol abuse, human sexuality, and study skills. 2303650. Initiate and take part in outreach services to the campus community (student orientation, Campus screening days, etc.) including collaboration and liaison with other college stakeholders.

  • Assist in training activities of pre-doctoral interns, externs, and practicum students. Activities include but are not limited to supervision, extern/intern selection process, attending training committee meetings, etc. Contribute to efforts to maintain and improve training programs at CAPS as needed.

  • Professional Development and Committee Involvement: Participate in opportunities that promote your learning, growth, and development (i.e. classes, training, committee, webinar, etc.). Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas outside of your individual unit/department (i.e. campus wide traditions, events, programs, etc.). Other duties or projects assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Evening and weekend work may be required at times.

Special Notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
