Overview

The Mental Health Counselor (Licensed) is responsible for contributing to that environment and exhibits potential for excellence in their areas of expertise. This position assists the Director of Student Mental Health of the Student Health Clinic with direct student services. The successful candidate will hold academic rank at Old Dominion University (ODU), contributing to the institution's academic and clinical mission.

Responsibilities

Provides culturally sensitive and clinically competent, outpatient personal and mental health counseling, consultation, and referral services on an individual basis.

Maintains and completes documentation that meets qualitative and billing standards in a timely fashion. Maintains confidentiality of client information in accordance with professional standards, Health Information Portability and Accountability Act, Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, and Commonwealth of Virginia statutes.

Collaborates with Student Health staff in management of students with comorbid health concerns.

Participates in residency educational activities, including teaching and clinical supervision, and on institutional committees.

Collaborates with Academic Affairs and Student Affairs in relation to Student Mental Health planning and development.

Attends administrative conferences, in-service and continuing education programs, focused on student mental health.

Acts as a consultant for student mental health promotions or projects, when requested.

Qualifications

Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, or related. PhD or PsyD preferred. Must have appropriate licensure/license eligibility in Virginia. A minimum of one (1) year of experience providing mental health services. Knowledge and experience with mental health issues commonly encountered in a graduate healthcare education setting is preferred. Must have a sophisticated understanding of how intersectionality, privilege, and oppression relate to the mental health of graduate healthcare students.

Strong communication and leadership skills. Proven diplomacy and flexibility in multi-faceted environments.
