POSITION SUMMARY:

The Mental Health Advocate strives to reduce the impact of stressful or traumatic life events and situations in the Emergency Department through assessment, intervention, prevention, advocacy, and education. The Mental Health Advocate engages patients, families, and team members in identifying a patient�s psycho-social needs in order to develop appropriate interventions and coordinate optimal, and safe plans of care.

To educate, counsel, and refer as indicated. To provide for environmental safety and serve as a sitter if one-to-one observation is required. To plan and communicate effectively with multi-disciplinary team and community resources and support the Information Sharing Core Element of PFCC.

EDUCATION:

High school diploma minimum, Bachelor�s degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years in mental health, child life, or related healthcare experience.

SPECIAL SKILLS:

Special Skills: Assess and interact with patients and families.

Provide a therapeutic and safe environment for individuals and groups of all ages. Assist patients in coping with the stress of hospitalization, illness, death, situational or psychological crisis, and/or loss. Evaluate for signs of escalating behavior while performing safety observations.

Effective listening skills. Ability to pay attention to details, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure. Ability to follow-through using appropriate channels of communication.

Ability to function competently in stressful situations and the changing work environment related to changing patient needs, including working with patients with acute, chronic, and complex disease processes. Ability to work cooperatively with patients, family members, and multidisciplinary team members (i.e. Physicians, Crisis Intervention Screeners).
