Job Description

Your next adventure at VMware is only a click away!

At VMware, we are committed to helping our people grow professionally. Our talented employees exemplify our shared values and continue to drive our company to new heights.

If you see a position that might be right for you, we encourage you to apply and continue to be a part of our EPIC2 community.

About MAPBU

Ready to build? So are we. Come join VMware's new Modern Applications Business Unit (MAPBU), made up of products and services under the Tanzu portfolio to help customers build, run and manage their most important applications.

About Our Team: Platform Automation

Platform Automation enables our customer's Platform Engineers to automate the installation and updating of workloads running on VMs, and collaborates with teams doing the same for workloads running in containers on top of Kubernetes. We aim to create tools and documentation that make deploying and upgrading workloads simple, fast, and consistent.

We value continuous collaboration with our users to allow for tight feedback loops when developing the product. We value test-driven development, pair programming, retrospectives, continuous integration and working at a sustainable pace. We nurture psychological safety within teams and empower them to drive the changes necessary to obtain successful outcomes. We build software and solve problems collaboratively. Teammates are always accessible to lend a helping hand remotely. Mentorship from senior engineering leadership is built into our process.

The Platform Automation team is primarily based out of Denver, and works closely with teams distributed across San Francisco, Santa Monica, Denver, New York, and Seville. For this role, we're looking for someone who can collaborate closely with teammates in Mountain Time.

What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

First 30 days

  • Learn about the suite of platform automation products, and the customer problems they solve. Understand how platform automation fits into our long term support strategy.

First 60 days

  • Work with the team to identify and build improvements to the platform automation products to support customers using Tanzu products with multiple foundations and with long term support products.

First 6 months

  • Work with the team to identify a path to ramp down the team to a minimal maintenance mode team and shift engineering efforts to supporting customers running their Tanzu platforms on top of Kubernetes.

About you

Interested? Here is what we look for in candidates:

  • You are a strong collaborator and actively foster safe and inclusive teams

  • You are interested in the Deployment and Packaging space and are looking to grow your expertise in this domain

  • You are interested in projects transitioning from the fast growth phase to the steady support of existing customers phase

  • You actively seek to create a blame-free learning environment; you enjoy mentoring others as much as you like learning from them

Technical skills and experience:

  • Ability to dive into large codebases (especially those written in Golang or Ruby) and contribute as you learn

  • Ability to research problems with technical ambiguity, break them into discrete parts, and make incremental progress

  • Ability to write clear technical docs and comfort with the idea that sometimes the right solution for users is excellent technical documentation, not code

Nice to Haves:

  • Familiar with a CI/CD tool, such as Concourse CI

  • Familiar with systems built with BASH and Docker

  • Familiar with working in diverse and highly collaborative environments

  • Familiar with Test Driven Development (TDD) and pair programming

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience

We strongly encourage you to apply even if you don't tick all the boxes because we want to hear from you and learn about what you can bring to the role.

Our team is currently working full time from home, and will have the choice of whether and when to return to a VMware office when it is safe to do so. We offer pandemic leave, a home office stipend, health and well being programs and more to support employees in working from home during a pandemic. You need to have some core hour overlap to collaborate with your team, however, we do our best to be flexible to support employees in dealing with the challenges of this time.
