Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

The Office of Research at the University of South Carolina is seeking to hire a Manager of the Mouse Experimentation and Gnotobiotic Germ-Free Core.

The Manager of the Mouse Experimentation and Gnotobiotic Germ-Free (MEGF) Core will perform a wide variety of duties, including the daily handling of laboratory rodents for research, monitoring and maintaining breeding colonies of transgenic and knockout mice, overseeing and maintaining the gnotobiotic mouse facility, and routine laboratory maintenance and duties. This individual will work closely with the Core Scientific Director to implement experiments.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and three or more years of experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of certifications, training, education, and/or experience. Experience with breeding colonies of transgenic and knockout mice, including mouse care, genotyping, laboratory maintenance, and mouse dissection.

Strong understanding of laboratory techniques, equipment, and safety protocols is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience maintaining a gnotobiotic facility. Experience preparing samples for principal investigators. Experience with Microsoft Excel.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Knowledge of environmental and nutritional requirements for laboratory animals.

Ability to follow written and oral instructions regarding maintaining/managing a lab.

Ability to to comply with policies, procedures, and regulations.

Daily Operations

Maintain breeding colonies of transgenic and knockout mice under regular and gnotobiotic conditions, including setting up and maintaining records of mice produced, genotypes, and disposition.

Maintain sterility of gnotobiotic isolators and mice in the gnotobiotic care facility.

Laboratory Maintenance

Oversee service contracts and coordinate with vendors for repairs and maintenance.

Implement and monitor regular maintenance schedules for all equipment.

Maintain clean and sanitary laboratories, including the cleaning of equipment.

Ensure compliance with all university policies, safety regulations, and standard operating procedures.

Administrative

Assist research associates and research assistants with animal experiments.

Create and update reports for all mouse colonies, including those in the Mouse Experimentation Core, those in the Gnotobiotic Germ-Free Core, and those being used by investigators with grant-funded research projects.

Coordinate scheduling, workflow, and resource allocation for core projects.

Manage inventory and order new materials as necessary.

Contribute to the core's general documentation and record-keeping to ensure transparency and accountability.

Supervise and train laboratory staff, including technicians, research assistants, and students.
