Medication Associate/Personal Care Associate (PCA) Part-time, 45 hrs/bi-weekly

The Medication Associate is a Personal Care Associate (PCA) who has been trained to administer prescribed medications and treatments to residents who need assistance following the state laws and regulations for required practices and policies for safe administration. The Medication Associate observes the resident taking the medication, notes effects including any unexpected or adverse effects, correctly documents the required information for each resident in either the e-MAR computer system or paper documentation as appropriate, communicates with the Director of Wellness (DOW), Associate Director of Wellness (ADOW), nurse, or designated personnel any concerns or observations. The Medication Associate is fully trained as a PCA and works as a PCA between medication pass assignments. Includes all functions of the PCA.

  • Follows Country Meadows/Ecumenical Community policies and procedures in the medication process, including shift narcotic count.

  • Administers medications to one resident at a time and observes resident taking medication.

  • Observes for additional care needs or any changes in resident's usual behavior, condition or functional abilities. Reports those observations to the nurse in a timely manner.

  • Responds promptly to resident requests for PRN medications and observes for effectiveness.

  • Seeks direction from the nurse for any treatment or medication orders that are unfamiliar or are different from prior orders.

  • Respects resident's right to refuse medication. Investigates the resident's decision to refuse and reports refusal to the nurse.

  • Consistently utilizes Standard Precautions and follows infection control procedures as indicated.

  • Protects resident rights and confidential information according to state and federal laws.

  • Provides social and emotional support, including sensitivity to resident needs for privacy, and encourages resident independence.

  • Interacts and communicates with residents and families in a respectful manner. Refers family to nurse or management for service/care concerns.

  • Observes for signs of resident abuse or neglect. Takes immediate action to prevent harm and to report incidents according to company policy and state law.

  • Participates in Wellness meetings and uses the customer support plan daily when assisting with medications or providing care.

  • Performs a regular med cart audit, which includes re-stocking supplies, checking for expired meds, cleaning the cart, checking PRN meds for adequate supply, identifying unused PRN meds and notifying the nurse, cleaning the computer keyboard, and checking each drawer for loose pills.

  • Promptly reports any e-MAR software or computer problems to the appropriate persons and seeks assistance to troubleshoot computer documentation issues. Maintains current knowledge of QuickMAR program.

  • Follows established documentation procedures for all medications.

  • Maintains up-to-date medication certification requirements.

  • Compassionate and empathetic in personal interactions.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Basic computer skills, including use of e-mail.

  • Highly organized.

  • Self-supervising and self-motivating with willingness to cooperate and to work as a team member.

  • Protects resident rights and confidential information according to state and federal laws.

  • Adaptable and flexible, with the ability to multitask.

  • Must be dependable, punctual, self-motivated, and able to work without constant supervision.

  • In case of fire or other internal disaster, assists in evacuating residents to exits.

Work Environment:

  • Stand/walk up to eight hours a day.

  • Sit up to four hours a day.

  • Frequently support up to 70 pounds.

  • Occasionally lift/carry up to 50 pounds.

  • Frequently kneel, bend, squat, climb and reach.

  • Push/Pull up to 100 pounds.

  • Secure proper assistance for transferring and lifting of residents as needed.

  • Workplace includes the entire building excluding the attic.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Prior direct care experience preferred.

  • High school diploma, GED, or active CNA.

  • Current CPR and first aid.

  • Have the ability to understand and speak English at a level which allows the safe, efficient performance of the job.

  • Successful completion of e-MAR training.

  • Successful completion of Direct Care Worker Course.

  • Successful completion of the mandatory state Medication Assistance Course and related training.

The Personal Care Associate (PCA) focuses their efforts supporting residents with daily activities to support their personal hygiene, socialization, cognition, spiritual being and physical health. PCAs encourage independence, support resident choice and preserve resident dignity through their professional manner and interactions. * Practices responsible teamwork as evidenced by openly communicating with co-workers, participation in facility meetings, commitment to work group's efforts to improve operations or resolve problems and a willingness to lend assistance to other campus co-workers. * Provides residents with assistance for personal needs according to customer service plan. Resident needs may include, but not limited to: toileting, bathing, dressing, grooming, mobility, transport, dining, and simple treatments. * Practices patience, compassion, and empathy in all interactions with all residents, including those who may be suffering from dementia. * Consistently utilizes Standard Precautions and follows infection control procedures as indicated. * Assists residents with dining. May include but not limited to preparing/cleaning the dining room, assist with food selection, and serving beverages and food. Promotes pleasant and inviting dining environment and encourages social interaction among residents. * Completes resident laundry in a thorough and organized manner as scheduled. * Cleans resident rooms, bathrooms, common areas according to protocols & schedules where assigned. * Consistently practices proper body mechanics and safe handling techniques and demonstrates proper use of a gait belt when assisting residents. * Consistently implements a restorative philosophy by focusing on residents' abilities and providing encouragement & support to residents to be as independent as possible.
