UPMC Chautauqua WCA is excited to be hiring for a Full-Time Medical Technologist or Medical Lab Technician to help support its lab! Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title & salary based on their experience and education:

  • Medical Lab Technician salaries starts at $16.17/hr.

  • Medical Technologist salaries starts at $20.49/hr and are eligible for up to $9,000 sign on bonus!

Provide authority, responsibility and accountability for the accurate performance of laboratory testing of a routine and advanced nature. These tests are used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and in the evaluation of a patient's response to treatment. Apply competent clinical knowledge to achieve accurate clinical testing which leads to quality patient care outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct, direct or assist with test development and methodology/equipment evaluation, selection and implementation.

  • Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols. Recognize factors that affect measurements and results and initiate the necessary corrective action according to established protocols. Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take action as outlined in predetermined protocols.

  • Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Perform minor repairs. Use reagents and supplies in a cost-effective manner; monitor and maintain an appropriate supply inventory.

  • Train and orient new employees, students and residents, as applicable and as assigned.

  • All duties inclusive of an MLT (Medical Laboratory technician), and:

  • Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments and their interrelationships as well as physiological conditions affecting test results.

  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance and personnel policies. Follow established procedures for the collection (including phlebotomy, as required) and processing of specimens for analysis including the appropriateness and stability of the sample. Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Assume responsibility for first-line supervision of the section/department on a temporary basis as delegated.

  • Performs High Complexity Testing (as defined by PA DOH) without direct supervision.

Qualifications

  • Medical Technologist:

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program,

  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification,

  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory,

  • OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 and PA Bureau of Laboratories for technologist performing high complexity testing.

  • Prefer 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

  • Medical Lab Technician:

  • Associate degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as either a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA),

  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent certification,

  • OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.

  • Minimum 1 year's experience in a hospital laboratory preferred.

  • Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Medical Technologist MT(ASCP),

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS (ASCP), or equivalent certification preferred.

  • New York License Required for NY Locations.

  • Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP), or

  • Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.

Establishes policies and procedures to provide administrative direction for menu formation, food preparation, distribution and service, budgeting, purchasing, sanitation standards, safety, staffing and staff development. Responsibilities: * Attends professional meetings and conferences to keep informed of current practices and trends in the field of dietetic, nutrition and food service. Attends system wide meetings and leads system working groups as needed. * Determines quality and quantity of food required plans and prepares age appropriate master menus, supervises the planning of menus for therapeutic diets and control food costs. Ensures inspection readiness at all times. * Establishes and maintain rapport with medical, nursing and other departments so as to coordinate effective and efficient dietary services and activities. * Ensures the preparation of job descriptions and qualifications, performance evaluations, organizational charts and emergency preparedness, infection control and facility manuals reviewing all phases of the development operations. * Promotes a climate for collaboration, coaches and counsels and celebrates departmental success with the team. Reviews records and reports of number of meals, nutritional analysis of meals, costs of raw food, labor, supplies and inventories * Oversees food production, clinical nutrition and service programs as well as departmental personnel involved. Oversees the following: Interviews applicants for employment Orients and evaluates employees on a regular basis according to prescribed guidelines. Terminates employees according to standard procedures as required. Provides in-services and continuing education opportunities for the facility's dietary staff. * Continuously asses and reviews department performance and facility change procedures to improve services, simplify work flow, assure compliance with regulatory requirements, promote efficient operations and improve the performance of the department to meet customer needs and improve healthcare outcomes. * Leads the clinical nutrition efforts as appropriate. Maintains electronic food and nutrition management tools accurately at all times. Makes frequent inspections of all work, storage and servicing areas to determine that regulations and directions governing dietetic activities are followed. * Oversees the preparation of work schedules, vacation schedules, maintains records of tardiness and absenteeism. Prepares departmental budget on annual basis. Attends department head, safety, infection control and other hospital meets as directed. Qualifications * Bachelor's degree required. 5 years relevant food/nutrition experience required 4 years relevant leadership experience required OR * Equivalent combination of education/experience HS Diploma/GED Required. 7 years relevant food/nutrition experience required 6 years relevant leadership experience required. * Must be able to accommodate flexible scheduling including weekends and holidays.
