JOB SUMMARY

Provides information for patient diagnosis and treatment by processing and maintaining the stability of patient specimens and by performing the ordered laboratory tests.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Oversee the daily activities of laboratory staff, with a focus on monitoring the quality of work, workflow, and turn-around-times, providing technical assistance and constructive feedback.

  • Assist laboratory manager with staff scheduling to ensure proper coverage and staffing levels throughout the day and minimizing overtime.

  • Act as a point of contact when Laboratory Manager is not available.

  • Act as a super user for Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Laboratory Information System (LIS) and be a resource to phlebotomy, laboratory, and clinical staff.

  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory instrumentation to provide training to new staff members and assist in providing education and continuing development to current staff members.

  • Oversee inventory management and supply ordering, informing manager of special departmental needs.

  • Oversee and help monitor quality control and linearities for analytes, establishing new ranges and provide data to address quality issues.

  • Participate in the evaluation, review, and training of new and established techniques and procedures including instrumentation requirements, method comparison, new instrument set up, correlations, and procedures.

  • Participate in review of lab procedures and reports any discrepancies to the Laboratory Manager.

  • Perform all testing that qualifies under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) definition of moderate complexity testing, as well as waived testing.

  • Adhere to all laboratory safety practices and emergency procedures to ensure safety and emergency preparedness.

  • Follow the department procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

  • Adhere to the department quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.

  • Monitor and identify potential problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, correcting as appropriate or immediately notify laboratory manager.

  • Follow the laboratorys established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratorys established acceptable levels of performance.

  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratorys established performance specifications.

  • Assist designated technical consultant with maintaining thorough and accurate documentation of quality control, proficiency testing, corrective action, quality assurance and instrument troubleshooting.

  • Assist designated technical consultant with documentation and retention of all required activities and documents to assure compliance with both regulatory and accreditation standards applicable to the laboratory.

  • Participate in CLIA inspections as needed.

  • Participate in educational, professional development activities and training exercises as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of laboratory standards, procedures and equipment, accessioning, verifying specimens and specimen requirements

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of HIPAA privacy rules.

  • Skill in communicating in a professional manner, both verbally and in writing.

  • Skill in planning, organizing, and time management.

  • Skill in using a computer and a variety of software, including Electronic Health Records (EHR) software, Laboratory Information System (LIS), Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.

  • Skill in managing multiple priorities and problem solving.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet established goals and objectives.

  • Ability to maintain high levels of professional and personal integrity.

  • Ability to convey professional demeanor and sound judgment in dealing with patients care, protection of patient privacy, and confidentiality.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Ability to act as a good representative of the company.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Laboratory Science or related science, which includes a one-year internship in an approved clinical laboratory required. American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification required. Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) or Medical Lab Technician (MLT) certification required. A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a clinical, hospital, or referral laboratory setting, utilizing electronic Health Records (EHR) required. One (1) year of experience in phlebotomy preferred.
