Medical Technologist Laboratory (PRN)

HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake is a full-service hospital offering a 531 bed inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty services. The campus includes Level II trauma capabilities, a Neuroscience Institute, The Heart & Vascular Hospital, a bariatrics program, the Breast Diagnostic Center, a wound care center, a level III Neonatal ICU, and the area's only pediatric emergency department and pediatric ICU.

HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake is affiliated with HCA Houston Healthcare, part of the HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division. The division is a comprehensive network of hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, emergency centers and diagnostic imaging facilities in greater Houston, Corpus Christi and South Texas. Facilities include: 17 hospitals, nine ambulatory care centers, 13 off-campus emergency centers, and a regional transfer center.

What you will do in this role:

  • Perform diagnostic test procedures accurately in accordance with the written policies and procedures.

  • Adhere to quality control protocols. Perform and document prescribed maintenance procedures.

  • Exercise independent judgment in error identification and problem solving.

  • Report work accurately, legibly and in accordance with the criteria for abnormal and critical values.

  • Work efficiently and respond to stats and other priority tests to provide optimum patient care.

  • Interact professionally with lab personnel and with other hospital departments.

  • Assist with evaluation of equipment and procedures, orienting new employees and training students.

  • May be assigned to other tasks and/or required to vary schedule to meet the needs of the laboratory and the patients.

  • Will comply with universal precautions and adhere to safety standards and practices.

  • Will use the Laboratory Computer System and will be assigned to the security level appropriate to the job.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to the Power of One Gulf Coast Division Standards of Behavior.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Preferable one to two years of clinical experience, but consideration may be given to a new graduate.

  • Bachelor in Medical Technology.

  • Medical Technologist (ASCP) certification preferred.

  • Must be detail oriented and able to operate mechanical, electrical and computer controlled instrumentation.

  • Must have a working knowledge of PCs and Lab Information Systems.

  • Possess knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the population of the patients served.

What you will do in this role: The Hyperbaric Technologist, under the direction of the Director of the Outpatient Wound Care Department, administers hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patients as prescribed by the Hyperbaric Physician. * Performs duties under supervision of the Program Director, Clinical Nurse Manager and/or Physician in Charge as appropriate for the facility. * Responsible for the safe and effective operation of the multiplace hyperbaric chamber and related support systems. * Responsible for the safe delivery of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to the hyperbaric patient as an inside attendant. * Tolerate pressurization and depressurization in a hyperbaric chamber Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Chamber Operators/Inside Attendant of multiplace chamber systems are relied upon to have a very high level of knowledge in the chamber system, chamber operating procedures, and air decompression. For this reason, the requirements necessary to satisfactorily perform in this position are very stringent. * Required knowledge of physical gas laws and formulas necessary to function in this position * Be familiar with the contraindications associated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy * Demonstrated competency for Chamber Operation- Pressurization, Treatment, Decompression, cleaning, inspection, maintenance, daily quality log documentation, TCPO2 Testing * Tolerate pressurization and depressurization in a hyperbaric chamber (Multiplace Only) * Ensures departmental compliance with the requirements of JCS, NFPA 99, PVHO, UHMS, NBDHMT, and all other applicable unit safety policies. * Familiar with Multiplace Emergency Procedures * Intimately familiar with the chamber system layout and complex, including: * Liquid oxygen system (liquid oxygen level, proper pressure range, oxygen pressure builder) * Compressed air system (refrigerated dryers, compressor operating range, air purification system and volume tanks) * Chamber System (air, LOX, BIBS, exhaust, fire suppression, bac up power supply, communications, chamber lighting and setting, video systemsO2 analyzer, chamber relief, secondary air supply) * Chamber Internal (Deluge, Oxygen Hoods and supply/exhaust to/from oxygen hoods, masks, communications and thermometer) * Performs hyperbaric chamber operations and system maintenance as required. * Chamber Operators must qualify and serve as Inside Observers prior to completing the requirements to become Chamber Operators. Certified Hyperbaric Technologists (currently qualified / certified) may serve as Chamber Operators immediately after satisfactorily demonstrating the requisite knowledge of the chamber system to the Lead Hyperbaric Technologist/RN and Department Director * Demonstrated competency for Patient Care- Safety checklists, patient evaluation pre/post treatment, blood sugar, vital signs, wound measurements, patient monitoring, treatment documentation, patient education, provide wound care , assist RN/Wound Care * Coordinators with patient wound care visits & procedures. Assists in patient preparation for treatment. Reinforces education as it relates to hyperbaric therapy. * Keeps complete and accurate patient records as they pertain to treatment documentation. * Maintains competencies, continuing education and certifications as appropriate. * Utilizing data software for wound management. * Makes appropriate entries for daily hyperbaric treatments and wound care clinic visits including photo uploading. * Lift patient or transfer per local policy. * Performs duties and procedures as directed by Department Director, Nurse Manager, Medical Director, and in some cases the Hyperbaric Safety Director What qualifications you will need: * Maintains and demonstrates competency in BLS (Basic Life Support Certification), infections control, safety and all unit required skill review. * In addition to being a qualified diver, emergency medical technician, certified nursing assistant or nurse, the hyperbaric technician must be knowledgeable of the physical laws that influence pressure and its relation to volume, temperature, pressure and the effects of pressure on gases entering a patient's bloodstream. Must also be aware of the symptoms of the various pressure-related injuries and illnesses that a person in recompression may suffer. * Prior to hire completed initial medical examination/or period examination conducted within the last 5 years with clearance, by physician qualified to perform commercial diver medical examination, following ADCI or UHMS recommended guidelines. * Tolerate pressurization and depressurization in a hyperbaric chamber (Multiplace Only) * Complete competencies skill checklist. Initial and annual (post hire). * Must possess patient assessment and care experience. Wound Care Center chamber operators and inside attendant must be a healthcare professional actively certified or licensed in one of the following vocations to meet the minimum education and experience requirements. State or Local Rules may apply. * Respiratory Therapist * Military: Corpsman or Medical Services Specialist * Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic * Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Licensed Vocational Nurse * Certified Hyperbaric Specialist * Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse * Certified or Registered Medical Assistant * Certified Hyperbaric Technologist * Certified Nursing Assistant * Certified Hyperbaric Wound Specialist * Physical Therapist or Physical Therapy Assistant * Other allied healthcare professions as approved by the NBDHMT (NBDHMT.org) for certification eligibility Individuals who have successfully completed U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) hyperbaric training. * E.g. * U.S. Navy, Army, or Coast Guard Diver (1st Class, 2nd Class or Master Diver designation)- Does not include Scuba (only) Diver * U.S. Air Force Aerospace Physiology Specialist * Additionally, each chamber operator attends, or provides verification of attendance to, an Introductory Hyperbaric Training Course as approved by the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology, Department of Defense, American College of Hyperbaric Medicine, or Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society.
