JOB SUMMARY - MT ASCP or MLT ASCP will be considered Performs various chemical, hematologic, serologic, immunohematologic, microscopic, and microbiologic analyses to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Receives or obtains specimens for laboratory analysis, then applies techniques used in the field of medical technology to those specimens.

-Relationships:#Works closely with other lab employees. Have frequent contact with patients and their families, physicians and their office staff, and nursing personnel, either face to face or on the telephone. # PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Performs all professional activities related to hematology, chemistry, blood bank, and microbiology.

Perform STAT tests, such as CBC, PTT, RSV, influenza, positive blood cultures, and Protime within 30 minutes of receipt in laboratory. Perform and report STAT tests such as electrolytes, BUN, Creatinine, cardiac enzymes, and therapeutic drug levels within 45 minutes after receipt in laboratory. Use computer to order tests, determine tests ordered, and report results in an appropriate timeframe.

An appropriate timeframe will be based on clinical diagnosis, priority expressed by order, and normal values for patient#s age and sex. Compiles data for special reports and quality improvement activities. Answer the telephone, using good communication skills.

Make reagents. Responsible for validity of daily test results and quality control. Maintain records of all quality control procedures.

Perform preventive maintenance on all instrumentation. Able to resolve somewhat highly complex problems in all laboratory sections. Participate in accurate collection of workload statistics.

Able to work alone in department for complete shifts. Train students and new personnel. Observe proper safety practices in performance of job duties.

Follow hospital policies and procedures. Evaluate patients for any special approach or procedural needs based on age, sex, cultural values, and psychosocial status. Observe patient and employee confidentiality as described by the privacy policies of this institution.

Demonstrates job related aspects of patient safety to assure a safe environment, safe and effective use of equipment and technology, and decreased risk of potential adverse patient occurrences. Demonstrate knowledge of and supports hospital mission, vision, and value statements, standards, policies, procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality statements, corporate compliance plan, customer service standards, and the code of ethical behavior. # JOB SPECIFICATIONS EDUCATION 1.Associates or Bachelor degree in Medical Technology or a related science from an accredited college or university. Board certification or eligibility by ASCP, ASMT, HEW (HHS), or equivalent at the Medical Technologist level or equivalent required.

Categoricals will be considered. # EXPERIENCE 1.One (1) year experience required as Medical Lab Technician, or Medical Technologist, to work as a generalist through all areas of the laboratory. JOB KNOWLEDGE 1.Understands principles, uses, and limitations of laboratory procedures and equipment. Familiar with standard laboratory methods and techniques, including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, toxicology, immunohematology, record keeping, and others.

Understands proper handling of tissue for pathology and material for microbiological examination. Understands staining techniques, culture methods, and sterilization techniques. Adequate knowledge of the technical, legal, moral, and ethical aspects of laboratory testing, especially as it applies to immunohematology.

Able to perform and evaluate multiple methodologies. # ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES 1.Ability to travel independently within the department, including within confined spaces, to perform testing.

Ability to retrieve items weighing up to 5 pounds from cupboards and shelves from levels ranging from ceiling to floor.

Ability to reach forward to perform testing.

Ability to place items in the centrifuge, requiring extended upward and forward reaching, and retrieving them. ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL ABILITIES 1.Fine motor skills and precise eye/hand coordination required to perform laboratory tests, including manipulation of small containers, aspiration, and pouring of blood and body fluids. Ability to draw blood, including venous, capillary, and arterial sticks.

Ability to use automated, semi-automated, and manual pipets. Ability to operate mechanized laboratory equipment to perform required tests, including laboratory computer and keyboards. ESSENTIAL MENTAL ABILITIES 1.Ability to understand all laboratory procedures and policies, quality assurance, and CAP workload.

ESSENTIAL SENSORY REQUIREMENTS 1.Ability to see, read, and to visually evaluate and interpret test results, including good color perception (must be able to pass a color blindness test). Ability to communicate with the public, hospital staff, and co-workers, including via printed material and the telephone. Ability to feel a pulse in the wrist or arm to draw arterial blood gases. # INTERPERSONAL SKILLS 1.Ability to interact effectively with the public and hospital staff to provide laboratory services. Ability to interact effectively with other laboratory employees in order to maintain work flow, minimize performance, and complete duties.#
