UPMC East is hiring full-time Medical Technologists and Medical Lab Technicians to join our team of excellent lab professionals! Qualified candidates can receive up to a $7000.00 sign on bonus!

Sign-On Bonus details:

  • $5,000 for a 2 year commitment
  • $7,000 for a 3 year commitment

Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education.

  • Medical Lab Technician salary range: $17.44 - $27.58/hr.

  • Medical Technologist salary range: $21.90 - $31.41/hr.

Purpose:

In this role, you will provide authority, responsibility and accountability for the accurate performance of laboratory testing of a routine and advanced nature. These tests are used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and in the evaluation of a patient's response to treatment. Apply competent clinical knowledge to achieve accurate clinical testing which leads to quality patient care outcomes.

Responsibilities:

All duties inclusive of an MLT (Medical Laboratory Technician), and:

  • Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.

  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance and personnel policies. Follow established procedures for the collection (including phlebotomy, as required) and processing of specimens for analysis including the appropriateness and stability of the sample. Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols. Recognize factors that affect measurements and results and initiate the necessary corrective action according to established protocols. Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take action as outlined in predetermined protocols.

  • Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Perform minor repairs. Use reagents and supplies in a cost-effective manner; monitor and maintain an appropriate supply inventory.

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments and their interrelationships as well as physiological conditions affecting test results.

  • Conduct, direct or assist with test development and methodology/equipment evaluation, selection and implementation.

  • Performs High Complexity Testing (as defined by PA DOH) without direct supervision.

  • Assume responsibility for first-line supervision of the section/department on a temporary basis as delegated.

  • Train and orient new employees, students and residents, as applicable and as assigned.

  • Standard Responsibilities:

Qualifications

Medical Technologist:

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program,

  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification,

  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory,

  • OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 and PA Bureau of Laboratories for technologist performing high complexity testing. Prefer 1-year experience in a hospital laboratory.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

Medical Lab Technician:

  • Associate degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as either a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA),

  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent certification,

  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science,

  • OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing,

  • Minimum 1 years' experience in a hospital laboratory preferred.

  • Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred

Licensures, Certifications, and Clearances:

Required:

  • Act 34

Preferred:

  • ASCP Certification:

  • Medical Technologist MT(ASCP),

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS (ASCP),

  • Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP),

  • Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA), or equivalent certification preferred.

Competently performs a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative to apply prescribed ionizing radiation for diagnostic purposes. Responsibilities: * Performs computed tomography procedures utilizing established scan protocols, including contrast administration without requiring constant supervision. * Utilizes complex imaging equipment for the acquisition, analysis, reconstruction and documentation of image data and completes procedures according to protocol. * Ensures all exams within his/her area of responsibility are properly coded and tracked through RIS system, all exams are properly networked to ISITE for archiving and interpretation, and all charges are adequately entered for the exams performed. * Administers PO, rectal and IV contrast per physician orders/department policy and assess patients for potential risk factors prior to the administration of the contrast media required for the imaging procedure. * Demonstrates the ability to communicate instructions to patients in a clear and concise manner and explain procedures to help allay the patient's fears and solicit their cooperation. * Performs a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgement to adjust protocols, and initiative to apply prescribed ionizing radiation appropriately for diagnostic CT purposes. * Demonstrates a strong ability to interact with both patients and co-workers, while displaying a high level of caring, listening, dignity and respect. Able to work as team member within the department and all other departments to expedite patient care efficiently. * Identifies all patients properly by using two patient identifiers and utilizes universal protocol when performing procedures. Reviews patient history and assesses physician orders, applying specific departmental protocols for optimal results in the acquisition of data. Documents patient history in electronic record as required. * Demonstrates proper technique in venipuncture; demonstrates proper use of power injector according to set protocols set by department and/or manufacturer.
