Medical Technologist / Medical Lab Tech - Section Lead

General Description:

The Section Leader Specialist is responsible for daily technical supervision of his/her section's testing staff, testing procedures, equipment maintenance, quality control, inventory management, and patient result reporting. S/he performs highly complex testing procedures and reports laboratory results.

Essential Functions:

• Trains and provides continuing education for co-workers on new/revised testing procedures, new technology advances for the section, equipment calibration and maintenance, quality control procedures, and computer functions for the section.

• Assumes leadership and management functions in the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor or Laboratory Director.

• Performs high complexity testing procedures and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently.

• Orients, educates, trains, and supervises high complexity test performance by other staff in the section, and evaluates that performance by a set of defined criteria.

• Educates and trains all staff who work in that section on instrument maintenance, reagent verification, quality control performance, and calibration verification for all equipment and procedures in that section.

• Monitors quality control performance on a routine basis, and assures that results are within the stated acceptable ranges and/or corrective action documentation reflects actions taken to correct results that fall outside the stated ranges.

• Monitors records and documentation of all functions performed during instrument maintenance, reagent verification, and procedure calibration.

• Assures that the section meets all regulatory guidelines by maintaining current files and records, writing and revising procedure manuals to match work performance in that section, and by assisting the Laboratory Director with preparations for inspection by CAP, JCAHO, and/or CLIA agencies.

• Manages inventory of reagents and supplies utilized within that section.

• Organizes the section, assuring that the area is clean and neatly arranged for efficient workflow.

• Assures that the Laboratory Information System is appropriately configured for accurate test performance, and that all users are familiar with section functions.

• Provides on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established by the Laboratory Director or Medical Director.

• Provides assistance to the Laboratory Director in the investigation of corrective action and documentation, remedial actions, incident reports, and annual evaluation of testing personnel.

• Assists other members of the laboratory team in the timely completion of work assignments.

Education and Training Requirements:

• Associate's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science; or

• Associate's degree in medical laboratory technology from a NAACLS approved program; or

• High school graduate or equivalent and completion of an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 week duration

• Registered MT/ MLT

• Computer literate and proficient in Laboratory Information System (LIS)

• Minimum 4 years Lab experience

• Minimum 1 year experience in section for which candidate would be Lead
