Responsibilities and Qualifications

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGISTThe Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist is part of the provider care team who helps with diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions through the use of technical and scientific knowledge. This position is responsible for accurate, precise, and timely performance of laboratory tests.

Medical Technologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists evaluate and report test results while assuring compliance and meeting all regulatory requirements consistent with the quality of a World Class Laboratory. The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with Mercy Signature Service in all internal and external customer interactions.

MEDICAL LAB TECHNICIAN The Medical Laboratory Technician I is part of the provider care team who helps with diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions through the use of technical and scientific knowledge. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for Medical Technologist

Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a related science

Experience: Up to three years acceptable clinical laboratory experience as a certified MLS or equivalent or certification eligible new MLS graduate

Certifications: 1. Current certification as medical technologist/medical laboratory scientist through the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent. 2.

If ASCP certification was achieved after January 1, 2004, continuing certification maintenance must be documented to insure continuous and current certification. 3. Certification eligible individuals must achieve certification within six (6) months of hire.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for Medical Lab TechnicianEducation: Associates degree in Medical Technology or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a college/university accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency and successful completion of a NAACLS or ABHES accredited MLT program with the last year.

Experience: One year acceptable clinical laboratory experience as LSTIV/CSTI

Certifications: One year experience as LSTIV/CSTII and an associate degree OR associate degree in a major that meets an accreditation agency's requirements and one year experience. MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification or certification eligible with certification obtained within six (6) months of hire date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS for Medical Lab Technician

Preferred Education: Associate degree in chemistry, biology or other science related field that meets requirements for certification agency requirements.

Duties: * Utilize nursing knowledge and skills in the safe implantation of basic preventative, therapeutic, and nursing care of assigned patient as evidenced by documentation and observation of positive patient care outcomes. * Assists in data collection on the EMR. * Contributes to the development of the patient based on the identified patient problems/needs * Carries out physician orders accurately, directly, and indirectly. * Performs selected tasks related to patient care in a safe manner. * Administers medication accurately, observing patient response, as evidenced by documentation in the medical record and lack of negative outcomes. * Maintain and coordinate communication among patient, staff, and physician as evidenced within medical record, client, and health care team feedback. * Assists in assuring that effective communication exists with the patient as reflected in the plan of care. * Effectively communicate patient's changing needs and plans of care among staff members. * Report patient needs/programs and observations regarding patient's condition to the physician * Work collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team in coordination of the patient's care as evidenced by other department feedback. * Participates in staff development programs. * Attends scheduled staff meetings and is responsible for information discussed. * Assists patients, family members, or other clients with concern and empathy; respects their confidentiality and privacy and communicates with them in a courteous and respectful manner. * Answers and refers telephone calls or other inquires to ensure accurate and timely communications as facilitated. * Takes direction and initiate actions (cross/additional training) that will allow the assumption of cross-functional duties to ensure seamless patient care. * Demonstrates flexibility to perform duties wherever volume deems it necessary within the Clinic. * Demonstrates sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns. * Participates in continuing education activities and obtains required contact hours. * Complies with the Clinic's infection control policies and procedures which reflects OSHA Blood-borne Pathogens Standard to ensure a safe working environment for self and others. * All other duties as assigned.
