POSITION SUMMARY:

To be fully engaged in providing No Harm / Quality, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by: working as a team to maintain responsible attitudes, performing laboratory testing to provide quality results and using resources efficiently.

The Medical Technologist is assigned to one or more of the following laboratory sections of responsibility: Blood Bank, Microbiology ( Bacteriology, Virology, Parasitology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Immunology, Molecular Diagnostics), Core Lab, (Hematology, Coagulation, Routine Chemistry, Urinalysis), Special Chemistry.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Quality/No Harm:

  • Complies with the department policies/processes/procedures to provide accurate results, quality products and services with 2 errors per year.

  • Assures valid results as evidenced by zero patient or sample identification errors in the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of laboratory procedures.

  • Understands and applies sample quality control and equipment quality control per department policy as measured by review of quality control logs with 5 errors per year.

  • Is a self-starter in identifying and assuming ownership of opportunities for improvement.

Stewardship:

  • Manages daily workload in a productive manner.

Customer Experience:

  • Uses knowledge of instrumentation and procedures to assist others in troubleshooting and to cross train.

  • Complies with "I CARE" values as measured by no positive disciplinary action per Human Resources Policy 4.01.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • As required for Medical Technologist licensure by State of Florida and in accordance with CLIA guidelines.

  • Appropriate certification by the ASCP or other similar accrediting agencies preferred.

  • Must be willing and able to work with bio-hazardous/toxic materials following OSHA guidelines.

  • Excellent human relations skills

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Strong computer skills.

  • Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control procedures.

  • Must be able to work weekends and holidays when needed.

  • May be required to take call.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity to perform clinical/technical tasks.

  • Must pass color blindness test.

  • Must be able to lift 10 - 20 lbs. unassisted.

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods (2-3 hours).

  • Must be able to sit and operate a computer.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to function in a highly stressful environment.

  • Responsible for problem solving situations.

  • Able to make independent decisions.

  • Competent and confident in interpretation of all tests performed in the section.

Nursing care is provided to the individual patient, based upon cultural, spiritual and age specific needs. PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES: Quality/No Harm: Demonstrates effective medication administration provided to patients as evidenced by Preceptor Observation Tool, Skills Fair Demonstration, and Clinical Practice. Demonstrates appropriate delegation and supervision of patient care activities within the healthcare setting. Demonstrates effective communication with other members of the healthcare team and promotes effective team functioning. Utilizes Health First computer systems with regards to order entry, order inquiry, and patient care documentation. Demonstrates effective and safe clinical practice as evidenced by Skills Fair demonstration, completion of yearly Competency Assessment, and Age Specific Checklist. Coordinates interdisciplinary plan of care based on current evidence based practice. Documents all nursing care, change in condition, response to therapy, treatments, procedures and referrals on patient record to meet standards. Demonstrates dependability, reliability and flexibility. Stewardship: Uses and cares for equipment and supplies economically. Customer Experience: Provides patient, family, and/or caregiver education as directed by the plan of care. Provides service to patients and families with sensitivity and respect for their needs, expectations, age, cultural, and individual differences. Contributes to the patient experience as evidenced by positive patient satisfaction scores and HCAHPs scores for department/medical center and/or written compliments by patients/others as well as consistent performance of purposeful hourly rounding and bedside shift report. Rev 2/2019 QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Education: Graduate of an approved school of professional nursing ASN required Licensure: Current Florida RN licensure or endorsement. Certification: Must hold current AHA BLS Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintain. Certification (s) as required by specific unit. Experience: Must meet unit specific care requirements. Language: Must be able to speak/understand written and verbal instructions in the English language. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must have visual acuity and hand-eye coordination to perform clinical tasks. Must have corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Must be able to lift, turn, pull, push or ambulate patients/equipment up to 90% of the assigned shift. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds unassisted up to 33% of the assigned shift Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and stoop up to 90% of assigned shift Potential for exposure to bio-hazardous waste, and known or unknown diseases MENTAL DEMANDS: Must have ability to work in often stressful environment with patients/families at various ages and levels of understanding.
