To be fully engaged in providing No Harm / Quality, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by: working as a team to maintain responsible attitudes, performing laboratory testing to provide quality results and using resources efficiently.

The Medical Technologist is assigned to one or more of the following laboratory sections of responsibility: Blood Bank, Microbiology ( Bacteriology, Virology, Parasitology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Immunology, Molecular Diagnostics), Core Lab, (Hematology, Coagulation, Routine Chemistry, Urinalysis), Special Chemistry.


Quality/No Harm:

  • Complies with the department policies/processes/procedures to provide accurate results, quality products and services with 2 errors per year.

  • Assures valid results as evidenced by zero patient or sample identification errors in the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of laboratory procedures.

  • Understands and applies sample quality control and equipment quality control per department policy as measured by review of quality control logs with 5 errors per year.

  • Is a self-starter in identifying and assuming ownership of opportunities for improvement.


  • Manages daily workload in a productive manner.

Customer Experience:

  • Uses knowledge of instrumentation and procedures to assist others in troubleshooting and to cross train.

  • Complies with "I CARE" values as measured by no positive disciplinary action per Human Resources Policy 4.01.


  • As required for Medical Technologist licensure by State of Florida and in accordance with CLIA guidelines.

  • Appropriate certification by the ASCP or other similar accrediting agencies preferred.

  • Must be willing and able to work with bio-hazardous/toxic materials following OSHA guidelines.

  • Excellent human relations skills

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Strong computer skills.

  • Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control procedures.

  • Must be able to work weekends and holidays when needed.

Processing customer requests (with the understanding that patients, visitors, all hospital staff, physicians and fellow co-workers are all our customers) and resolving customer issues in a fantastically friendly, courteous, professional and timely manner. Using all resources in the most efficient manner. PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES: Quality/No Harm: Understands and applies knowledge of test specimen requirements and utilizes available reference materials to ensure that all required specimens are collected and no omission errors or inadequate specimens result. Uses care in performance of duties to avoid clerical errors at the points of registration or test order from Reference Lab Requisitions (errors: tests ordered under wrong account, tests ordered under wrong facility, tests ordered under wrong physician, wrong test ordered, or not ordering tests as indicated); as applicable. Complies with policies/procedures/processes in the collection and processing of patient specimens and provision of patient services, including offsite phlebotomy services as applicable. Meets collection turn-around-times >98% daily. Performs venipunctures with <3% recollects.<br /> Performs blood culture collections with <3% contamination rate.<br /> Assures valid patient results as evidenced by zero patient or sample identification errors in the pre-analytical and post-analytical phases of laboratory procedures per evaluation period. Understands and provides quality patient care by providing complete and accurate information on all collection materials (labeling errors during collection defined as: rejected specimen due to manual misspelling of patient name or rejected specimens due to missing required information). Ensures the correct procedures are performed on the correct patient by verifying two forms of patient identification. Verifies orders from the requisition. Verifies that the label (s) is ordered correctly and corresponds to the requisition, as applicable. Practices aseptic and sterile techniques. Meets safe driving requirements and maintains uncompromised specimen integrity during transporting of specimens via automobile, as applicable. Adheres to Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals. Reports all malfunctioning equipment (non-IT) to the BioMed department, fellow associates and management. Reports all malfunctioning IT equipment (i.e., telephones, PC's, paper printers, etc.) to the IT department, fellow associates and management. Completes specified jobs/tasks by deadline and/or provides requested information in a timely and concise manner. Maintains current AHA BLS certification, American Medical Technologists, National Healthcare Certification (but not limited to) and renews all applicable certifications before the expiration date in compliance with all renewal criteria; as applicable. Knowledge regarding location of emergency equipment/supplies and how to use such equipment/supplies. Familiar with the Health First Emergency Kardex and responsibilities in relation to specified emergent codes. Responsible for hurricane preparedness and their particular responsibilities as a Health First associate. Knowledgeable of specimen collection requirements and provides accurate and timely laboratory expertise. All specimens (s) are documented with the correct patient's information. Demonstrates the appropriate skill sets as determined by the "Annual Competency Assessments". Ability to perform basic computer skills pertinent to job performance. Monitors and complies with Joint Commission/CAP standards and performs all job functions in accordance with State and Regional requirements to ensure compliance to these standards. Offers suggestions for improvement with departmental improvements; implements or revises section protocols and/or department policies and procedures. Attends all mandatory meetings/in-services and reads and signs off on all meeting minutes as required. Stewardship: Ensures all test requests contain accurate information (specific exam requested matches order/requisition, correct ordering physician, appropriate medical necessity/diagnosis, etc.), or cancels incorrect test and reorders accurate test; as applicable. Availability to meet departmental staffing demands (i.e. holidays, weekends, coverage for illness and/or emergencies, reduced operations) per department expectations. Utilizes supplies/equipment in a proficient and cost effective manner when performing various procedures. Completes all required documentation and/or required forms. Completes all annual mandatory items, including input regarding Annual Performance Review. Demonstrates effective time management skills. Willingly assists in other areas of the department, hospital, and/or participates in community activities as a health first representative when needed. Remains flexible and adaptable to changes in workflow, processes, etc. Accepts additional responsibilities to assist with workload or to facilitate departmental goals/initiatives (i.e., voluntarily works additional hours, assists management with necessary workflow and/or process changes, data collection endeavors, etc.). Reports to workstation at scheduled time and follows breaks and lunch policies. Utilizes Kronos system properly. Accepts changes to the schedule or workflow based on patient volume. Customer Experience: Communicates effectively with customers (patients, physicians, other Health First associates, the public, etc.) practicing excellent customer relation skills at all times while organizing and directing the daily medical assistant functions of the department. Communicates customer experiences to laboratory management in a timely manner. Mentors co-workers and students technical development. Complies with the Health First I-Care values, as measured by no disciplinary action per Human Resources Policy 4.01. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: At least one year of demonstrated experience with venipuncture and specimen handling or equivalent experience based on the director's approval; OR proof of completion/letter from an accredited phlebotomy training program Current AHA BLS certification and maintained Valid FL Driver's License, as applicable Excellent customer service skills Good oral and written communication skills Ability to prioritize and organize to maximize quality, value, service and productivity Strong computer skills Willing and able to work with bio-hazardous/toxic materials following OSHA guidelines. Must be able to cover alternative shifts to meet customer needs when requested by supervisor Must be able to work weekends and holidays National Phlebotomy Certification from an accredited National Phlebotomy Certification Agency preferred EKG certification, as applicable Medical Terminology strongly preferred PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to adapt to a combination of sitting, walking, bending, stooping, reachingand lifting throughout the shift. Ability to push wheelchairs, stretcher and beds. Ability to be flexible in covering required shifts (mandatory overtime). Ability to lift up to 20 pounds unassisted, several times a day.
