Full-time Medical Technologist needed at a great hospital in Western New York!
(2nd or 3rd shift available!)
The Work involves performing one or more tests or examinations in a clinical laboratory incident to the diagnosis or treatment of diseases. This is laboratory work involving the performance of specialized as well as a variety of standardized tests. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher ranking technical employee for assignments and review of work for conformance to procedures. Does related work as required.

  • Receives specimens to perform routine or special tests on such material as blood, urine, sputum and body fluids

  • Conducts tests, examinations or analysis in such fields as bacteriology, immunology, hematology, immunohematology, chemistry, histopathology, blood banking or serology according to established procedures

  • Evaluates laboratory test data as to necessity for further process of specimens

  • Sets up and adjusts clinical laboratory equipment

  • Prepares various types of media, reagents, and test solutions

  • Prepares smears, stains and slides for microscopic analysis

  • Performs microscopic examinations on specimens including gram stains

  • Communicates essential laboratory data to physicians and other health officials as rapidly as is necessary to optimum patient care

  • Exercises care and safety in handling infections and biologically active specimens and in using clinical laboratory equipment

  • Collects specimens from patients which may include phlebotomy

  • Maintains records and prepares patient reports for tests and examinations

  • Keeps equipment clean and in working order

Requirements:
-Good knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, terminology and equipment as related to a clinical laboratory

  • Ability to perform clinical laboratory work with a high degree of accuracy

  • Ability to maintain accurate records of test results and prepare clinical laboratory reports

  • Ability to exercise safety precautions in handling infections and biologically active specimens and in using clinical laboratory equipment

Qualitifcations:
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology, Medical Technology or related title which meets the standards set forth in Title 8, Article 165 of New York State's Education Law and Subpart 79-13 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education; or
B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in one of the biological, chemical, or physical sciences and one (1) year of experience in a clinical laboratory; or:
C) Possession of a license or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as issued by the New York State Education Department.

This class differs from that of Clinical Laboratory Technologist by virtue of its supervisory responsibilities and performance of more difficult and complex laboratory tests. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Clinical Laboratory Technologist for the assigned clinical section. Supervision is exercised over lower-level technical employees. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Supervises and performs a number of routine and special tests according to established procedures in two or more clinical laboratory sections: Biochemistry, Blood Bank, Diagnostic Immunology, Hematology and/or Microbiology; Performs more difficult and complex tests and examinations according to established procedures in two or more clinical laboratory sections; Evaluates and interprets laboratory test data as to necessity for further process of specimens utilizing laboratory information system (LIS); Performs quality control as needed to ensure accuracy of instrument function and appropriateness of reagents used in patient testing; Investigates quality control problems that cannot be fixed by lower-level staff; determines and performs such fixes; Assists with research and developmental/special studies; Maintains equipment and supplies of section(s); Maintains records of sections(s) and prepares reports; Performs other activities that contribute to patient care and/or maintenance of compliance with various regulations; Supervises lower-level staff by making assignments, reviewing and evaluating work performance; Supervises making of solutions and reagents, setting up of equipment and maintenance of equipment and supplies; Assists in the education and training of technical personnel and students through demonstrating procedures, overseeing work practice and evaluating progress; Keeps abreast of latest developments in the field; Collects specimens from patients, which may include phlebotomy. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, techniques, terminology and equipment as applied to a clinical laboratory; good knowledge of quality control and quality assurance procedures as applied to a clinical laboratory including verification and validation procedures; good knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, accreditation standards and ECMCC policies and procedures as they relate to a clinical laboratory; good knowledge of laboratory and hospital information systems; ability to perform difficult and complex clinical laboratory work with a high degree of accuracy; ability to exercise safety precautions in handling infections and biologically active specimens and in using clinical laboratory equipment; ability to supervise and train others; ability to maintain accurate records of test results and prepare clinical laboratory reports; ability to make minor repairs and maintain clinical laboratory equipment; ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions; ability to analyze and interpret clinical laboratory findings, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; ability to utilize a variety of electronic software applications; sound professional judgment; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A.) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology, Medical Technology or related title that meets the standards set forth in Title 8, Article 165 of New York State's Education Law and Subpart 79-13 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education and six (6) years of technical clinical laboratory experience in accordance with New York Code, Rules and Regulations, Title 10, Part 58-1.4; or: B.) Possession of a license or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as issued by the New York State Education Department and six (6) years of technical clinical laboratory experience in accordance with New York Code, Rules and Regulations, Title 10, Part 58-1.4. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Eligibility for licensure or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist at time of application; Possession of a license or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as issued by the New York State Education Department at time of appointment; Possession of a license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as issued by the New York State Education Department at time of permanent appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
