Job Summary

To perform and report various laboratory tests prescribed by physicians. Has advanced experience and/or laboratory training that gives this candidate the ability (tech skill inventory) to perform this service in multiple sections of the laboratory as assigned.

Job Responsibilities

Provide brief description of four or five separate responsibilities (not tasks or activities):

  • Accurately performs routine to moderately complex diagnostic tests or procedures as assigned in multiple laboratory sections (skill inventory) and reports results through appropriate channels. Completes, evaluates and records all appropriate quality controls and quality assurance markers.

    Activates troubleshooting procedures when necessary and trains others to perform this responsibility when assigned. Effectively trains others on new methods, technical procedures and practices.

  • Assists others (as appropriate based on skill level) with expertise of advance experience and or training (skill inventory) as necessary for laboratory operation.

  • Performs preventative/safety maintenance on equipment and maintains a safe, clean and efficient work environment. Takes initiative in problem solving equipment failures to the extent capable.

    Communicates unresolved issues to supervisor or designee. Complies with personal protective equipment (PPE) and other laboratory and hospital safety standards 100% of the time. Notifies supervisor of unsafe events.

    Responsibly controls and maintains inventory. Trains others to perform this responsibility when assigned.

  • Provides professional, courteous and calm customer service to both internal and external customers. Identifies appropriate resources and sources for re-directed inquiries. Acts as a reference source for laboratory procedures within their skill inventory as necessary.

  • Regularly reviews operational procedure manuals. Maintains individual annual technical competency assessments.

    Actively identifies and pursues learning needs. Actively participates in departmental and continuing education meetings. Successfully completes 12 units of approved continuing education activities during evaluation cycle.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelors in Medical Technology or other science related fields

Required Experience: Minimum of 3 years' experience and a minimal, demonstrated tech skill inventory.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations: M.T., (ASCP), (NCA), or related specialty certification.

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Exhibits the ability to work with computer programs and computer controlled equipment.

  • Exhibits the ability to handle and interpret data, multitask, and maintains confidential material.

  • Exhibits good laboratory technique and safety practices.

  • Exhibits good communication, technical and organizational skills.

The Medical Technologist is located within Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service and may be permanently or temporarily appointed on an intermittent, part-time or full-time schedule. The Medical Technologist develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures. Duties include, but are not limited to the following: * Performs a variety of biological specimen and/or environment samples using manual or automated techniques; * Performs a variety of laboratory disciplines such as chemistry, microbiology, immunology, hematology and immunohematology; * Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis, considering physiologic processes and requirements; * Carries out day-to-day operations in the laboratory to include routine testing, quality control and routine maintenance of instrumentation and troubleshooting; * Develops, performs, evaluates, interprets correlates and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results; * Monitors quality control systems and measures; * Provides education for laboratory healthcare professionals and the public, as needed; * Identifies discrepancies, solves problems, and suggests solutions; * Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment uses, identifies malfunctions, repairs and performs preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment and diagnoses deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction; * Performs and documents quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement; * Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors, which includes test results and interprets results and suggests follow-up tests; * Communicates effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member; provides excellent service as defined by the customer (healthcare providers, patients, and others); and gives direction and guidance using underlying principles of laboratory testing.
