The Medical Technologist in our BioAgilytix Boston facility is responsible for performing high complexity Clinical Diagnostic patient testing using technologies including RT PCR, ELISA, RIA, HPLC, cell culture, and ensuring specimen integrity by adhering to established procedures including quality control, quality assurance, and safety procedures as well as all relevant regulations.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Performing high complexity testing, especially DNA and RNA extraction with RT PCR, according to approved procedures and within established turnaround times.

  • Performing specimen handling and processing according to establish procedures.

  • Preparing reagents and documenting preparation and expiration requirements.

  • Accurately documenting all assay components for maximum sample and run traceability.

  • Entering, reviewing, approving, and releasing specimen results to clients.

  • Analyzing, reviewing, approving, and reporting test and quality control results according to established acceptance criteria and approved procedures.

  • Maintaining paper and electronic records of test results.

  • Troubleshooting test systems and taking appropriate remedial action when appropriate or as directed by Laboratory Management.

  • Performing and documenting routine equipment use, maintenance, calibration as well as routine, scheduled, and unscheduled preventive maintenance.

  • Operating all laboratory equipment and software according to approved procedures.

  • Reporting any deviations, nonconformances, safety incidents, or other events to Laboratory Management.

  • Adhering to all laboratory and company policies and procedures.

  • Adhering to all HIPAA requirements.

  • Proactively informing Customer Service of any issues which may cause late results.

  • Reviewing SOPs and other documentation as assigned.

  • Identifying problems which may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and taking appropriate action including notification of Laboratory Management.

  • Complying with quality assurance procedures.

  • Participating in laboratory continuing education programs.

  • Participating in proficiency testing and competency evaluation throughout the year.

  • Ordering and maintaining supplies required for assigned tests.

  • Performing and documenting lot-to-lot quality control of reagents prior to use.

  • Maintaining high quality records including but not limited to assay batch records, equipment maintenance forms, reagent preparation batch records, data analysis templates.

  • Participating in method development and equipment qualification activities as directed by Laboratory Management.

  • Maintaining strict cleanliness and adherence to safety protocols in designated and shared workspaces.

  • Training other technologists on tests and laboratory procedures.

  • Contributing to continuous improvement activities.

  • Supporting audits, inspections, and assisting in responding to observations, if applicable.

  • Maintaining knowledge of relevant regulations, standards, and guidelines.

  • Overseeing technical aspects of assigned assays and the work of other technologists on those assays.

  • Leading and participating in project based and improvement work.

  • Seeking efficiencies in testing and laboratory procedures.

  • Other duties as needed

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or related life science

  • National certification as a Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist

  • Not less than five (5) years' experience testing moderate to high complexity assays

Skills:

  • Strong knowledge and application of CLIA, CAP, and NYS DOH CLEP regulation, standards, and guidelines

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful, and efficient with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality

  • Ability to manage, set, and organize multiple priorities and exercise sound independent judgment within areas of responsibility

  • Knowledge and application of HIPAA regulations

  • Ability to research and benchmark industry best practices for application inside the Company

  • Ability to use a high degree of tact, discretion, and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive situations; ability to deal effectively with diverse individuals at all organizational levels

  • Ability to collect and analyze data using statistical methods

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment where multiple concurrent projects must be completed in a timely manner

  • Ability to take direction well and multi-task

  • Acute attention to detail and excellent organizational skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Proficiency in MS Excel and Word

  • Proficiency in LIMS and Quality Management software packages

Working Environment

  • Primarily laboratory environment

  • Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms

  • Rare exposure to skin and lung irritants, toxic materials, and hazardous waste

  • Personal protective equipment is required and provided, such as protective eyewear, garments, and gloves

  • Routine use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work in an upright and/or stationary position for up to eight (8) hours per day

  • Repetitive hand movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists to operate lab equipment

  • Frequent mobility needed

  • Frequent crouching, stooping, with frequent bending and twisting of upper body and neck

  • Light to moderate lifting and carrying (or otherwise moves) objects, including laboratory equipment, laboratory supplies, and laptop computer, with a maximum lift of 20 pounds

  • Ability to access and use a variety of computer software

  • Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand, with the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences

  • Frequently interacts with others to obtain or relate information to diverse groups

  • Requires multiple periods of intense concentration

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

  • This is a full-time position

  • Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the "core" work hours as published in the BioAgilytix Employee Handbook

  • Occasional weekend, holiday, and evening work may be required

WHO YOU ARE: YOUR ROLE & IMPACT As part of the dynamic Human Resources team at Charles River Community Health (CRCH), a healthcare practice providing comprehensive and compassionate care to underserved communities, the Medical Assistant will perform a variety of clinical and administrative tasks to keep the Medical Department running smoothly. The duties of Medical Assistant include but are not limited to taking medical histories, taking vital signs, managing patient flow, faxing, prescription requests, inventory and stocking, preparing instruments for use as well as any other duty assigned by supervisors. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES * Coordinate unit flow and monitor waiting area. * Escort patients to examination room, take and record patient history and vital signs such as height, weight, pulse, blood pressure, temperature, etc. for adults and children. * Perform and mount electrocardiograms (EKGs), and 3 DERM. * Obtain urine and blood samples and run point of care testing such as INR, A1C, HCG, Hb, Glucose, IH Lipids, Rapid HIV etc. Prepare specimens for transport to outside lab. Lab coverage for all clinical patients including MAH Prenatal. * Perform vision and hearings tests. Record information in charts as required. * Ensure that all required forms and or screenings such as PEDS, PHQ, MCHAT, Food Insecurity, C3 RAF forms, PVPs, GADS, SBIRTS, Tobacco Cessation, Fall Risk Assessments, School and Camp Forms, Procedure Consents, and Release of Medical Records are distributed, completed, and entered correctly. * Assist Provider during examinations and in minor procedures when necessary as well as in their school sessions. * During an acute medical emergency, act as liaison with other Health Center personnel, ambulance service and hospital. Must exhibit professionalism under stress. Assist providers with treatment during emergency. * Provide emotional support to patients during routine and emergency visits to Center. * Provide follow up communication by phone or mail with patients. * Handle phone calls and book appointments as appropriate. Cover check out when needed. * Wash, wrap, and prepare all instruments for sterilization. Assist with daily cleaning of rooms, stocking and maintenance of all inventory and supplies. * Provide skilled interpreting services within the department, and if available, to other parts of the Health Center. * Work within his/her assigned team, to ensure that daily tasks are being done and assistance is being provided to the team such as inventory, scrubbing scheduled, covering lab, and covering sessions. * Assist with the organization of ongoing in-service education within the Health Center and with outside agencies. * Participate in community outreach activities. * Maintain current patient education and referral information system in consultation with the staff. * Participate in training and orienting of new staff. * Work collaboratively with other Health Center staff in meeting JCAHO accreditation and other regulatory and/or funding requirements. * Attend and participate in team lead meetings, monthly staff meetings, and other activities that the Health Center promotes. * Perform other duties as assigned. YOUR QUALIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES, TRAITS * High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. * Medical Assistance Certificate required. * Required to work Evenings and Saturdays as needed in both locations. * Flexibility with schedule is required. Although CRCH attempts to accommodate preferences, Medical Assistants do not have set schedules. * Mature, responsible, and team oriented. * Strong organizational and communication skills. * Experience in health care. * Ability to work under pressure and flexibility to function in a changing environment. * Experience in diverse culture preferred. * MUST be Fluent in Spanish or Portuguese. * Strong conversational and written capabilities in English and Spanish required.
