GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB: The registered Medical Technologist, under minimal supervision is capable of performing all of the tests in a single area or majority of procedures in all areas, as defined by HCFA, of the clinical laboratory with appropriate sectional training. Performs highly complex procedures.

Assumes the duties and responsibilities of laboratory coordinators and supervisors in his and/or her absence. Performs manual and automated laboratory assays requiring independent judgment. Reports results to nurses and physicians relating the results to normal range for age; and recognizing and reporting critical values.

Evaluates and records quality control and patient results. Performs shift preventative maintenance procedures and independently initiates corrective action of procedures not in control. Assures quality of work, work flow, turn-around-time and timely reporting of values; Assures accurate testing to support quality patient care; Maintains and trouble shoots instruments within the section; Accept suggestions and corrections, adjust to changing situations; Safety precautions and protective attire must be used at all times according to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures; Performs other duties as assigned and is able to work hours beyond those of normal full time positions to fulfill duties and needs of Driscoll Children's Hospital; Must promote team leadership and be a team player; Must be familiar with performance and interpretation of laboratory procedures associated with pediatric hospital with most patients below the age of 21 years, 364 days; Responsible for creation and periodic review of Section procedure manual written in accordance with the NCCLS standards; and ensure that Corporate and Laboratory Integrity is in compliance with OIG guidelines.

The Registered Medical Technologist performs other duties as assigned and is able to work hours beyond those of normal full-time positions to fulfill duties and needs of Driscoll Children's Hospital. Adheres to hospital policies and procedures. Responsible for specific role during various internal and external CODE and disaster occurrences. Responsible for insuring compliance of Infection control techniques within the Laboratory.

Responsible for insuring compliance of Safety techniques within the Laboratory.

Responsible for insuring proper security procedures when entering the building and demonstrating appropriate use of ID badge. Responsible for insuring proper use of the Pneumatic Tube System.

Responsible for compliance of IOP/CQI issues. Responsible for insuring proper compliance with IOG. Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.

Maintains appropriate levels of supplies, reagents and request replacements within the established time policies. Assures that supplies are restocked for all three shifts. Confers with physicians and/or nurses on laboratory findings, timing and availability of test results or procedures.

Notifies section chief and/or Administrative Director immediately if laboratory and hospital policies and procedures are violated. Represents the laboratory section technically to assigned committees physicians, nursing staff, support staff and patients. Performs duties and responsibilities of medical laboratory technician.

Revises and reviews procedure manuals according to NCCLS guidelines. Communicates appropriately with coworkers, hospital personnel, physicians and physician offices. Evaluates and validates new reagents, equipment and procedures according to laboratory policies and procedures and regulatory guidelines.

Maintains knowledge of new technology and procedures and makes recommendations when appropriate. Responsible for specimen identification and integrity. Responsible for operation of equipment including maintenance and quality control.

Complies with established safety policies and protective attire. Maintain coverage of the laboratory to provide adequate patient care, which may require "last minute" schedule changes. Must promote team leadership and be a team player; Must be familiar with performance and interpretation of laboratory procedures associated with pediatric hospital with most patients below the age of 18 years; Provides clinical supervision/guidance, under the supervision of the Lead Manager and Senior Technologists, to peers , Phlebotomists and Student Affiliates.

Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) from a four-year College or University:

Required One year formal university/hospital based accredited course work in Medical Technology beyond a Bachelor's Degree ( Clinical Internship ). CERTIFICATION: MT (ASCP) Within one (1) year from DOH . THE FAILURE TO OBTAIN CERTIFICATION WITHIN A SIX (6) MONTH TIME PERIOD WILL RESULT IN TERMINATION OF THE TECHNOLOGIST LACKING CERTIFICATION.
